Well-written, exceptionally grounded, and not airy-fairy

This compassionate and exceptionally well-written book helped me start a daily Buddhist meditation practice, which I've continued now for several months. This book includes a number of great meditation exercises, an introduction to the mindfulness of breathing and to Metta Bhavani (universal loving kindness). It provided great comfort to me during a stressful time in my life, and I often pick it up and re-read passages of it; it has really changed my life, and I am so thankful that I discovered it.

Wonderful Primer for Starting a Serious Practice

This book is a wonderful primer for anyone wanting to get started on a meditative practice. I've studied many different forms of meditation over the years, and tried teachers, books, etc... But this book has helped me stick with my practice in a way others haven't. There's no fluff. Every page truly has value.

The book is wonderfully practical, and makes it very easy to learn and work the two starter meditations of Buddhism, and to gain value from them. The meditations it teaches are simple yet powerful, and I believe they can improve how people feel about themselves, and operate in the world.

I bought this book several years ago, and still turn to it regularly to review the principles and practices it describes. If you're at all interested in practicing meditation, I'd strongly recommend it.

I highly recommend this book. I'm new to Buddhism and meditation, but have read a number of books on the subject. Paramananda explains meditation in a straightforward manner. More importantly, he clearly illustrates the linkage between meditation, Buddhism, and living a mentally healthy life. I believe that I will return to this book throughout my life.

About the Author
OSAMU A. WAKITA is Professor of Architecture and Department Chair of Architecture at Los Angeles Harbor College. He has been involved in architectural education since 1958. He is the recipient of the California Council of the American Institute of Architects' prestigious Outstanding Architectural Educators Award and is listed in the Council Generals Reference as one of the leading authorities in perspective drawing. He also designs a number of custom residences each year.

RICHARD M. LINDE, AIA, is a licensed architect in California, Arizona, and Hawaii, and President of his own architectural firm, Richard M. Linde & Associates, Inc. Mr. Linde has provided architectural services internationally and in the various states in which he is licensed to practice. He is an authority on industrialized housing and is a former president of the American Institute of Architects, Cabrillo Chapter. Mr. Linde is the coauthor of The Professional Handbook of Architectural Detailing.

Great resource, even for CAD drafters

I bought this book when my younger brother started taking CAD classes to come work with me. I have found it to be an excellent resource, for the beginning draftsman, for putting together a set of plans. For the intermediate and advanced draftsman it is a valuable "checklist" book. The book only has one small section on CAD, but that is not the idea of the book.
This book will show you what is needed to be in a good set of plans. It has many examples of drawings and details and with good explanations for them. The explanations given also help you to understand what is being shown, but also why it is being shown. Having been in construction for over 20 years before I started drafting, I can say that the examples given are the types of drawings I wish came out to my jobs. You will be able to understand what information needs to be in your drawings, how to graphically show it. You will also be able to move around in the book and go to examples for whichever phase you are working on in your drawings and compare what you have done with what is given in the book.

No matter what level of draftsman you are, I would recommend this book. It will be an invaluable resource for you for years to come.

This book sets the standards for professionals in the architecture field!!! Well done. I've never seen a book so comprehensive as this one for the field of architecture. This book does what Graphic Standards never did or CAN. It gives architects an easier way to communicate their ideas with effective working drawing techniques and detailing logic! A must-see for every student of architecture or professional who owns a drafting table...even applies to CAD drawings!!!

A good book for clearing ISTQB Foundation Level and also for learning basic concepts in testing

I purchased this book with a sole intention of clearing ISTQB - Foundation level Exam.Meanwhile i realized that my foundation in testing had really got better once I started reading up this book.It helps learn the basic concepts in testing,terms,techniques,methodologies,process etc.

And of course the best book to clear ISTQB Foundation level exam.

Yes, you can pass the exam with this book

Like some other reviewers, I used this book to prepare the exam (I did not attend to a course or whatever) and I succeeded. The book focuses on the content of the exam and provides samples questions, which is exactly what you are looking for since your are here looking for ISTQB books.

I add that I am French and I passed the CFTL/ISTQB French exam. Even if the exam uses French terms ("unit tests" becomes "tests unitaires" and so on), the book works just fine as translations are straightforward.

Highly recommanded!

ISTQB or ASTQB exam

Today I cleared ASTQB exam with 80% solely depending on this book. I would recommend to any one preparing for the ISTQB or ASTQB exam to throughly study(my preparation was for 1 month) this book along with some online mock question papers. This book does not cover the latest i.e.,
April 2010 modified glossary and references terms but can be studied through ISTQB site. Just this book is enough for any one get through the foundation level exam.

Peter Wonson was the lead singer of the rock band Tracks from 1968 to 1971. Retired after a thirty-eight year career in education, he lives in Roanoke, VA, with his wife, Lee, a Public Health Nurse, and six dogs and cats. He is a Life Member of the NAACP, and a baseball fan. -------------------- Rick Hunt studied art with Ken Westhaver and at Massachusetts College of Art. A lifelong visual artist, Rick is represented in private collections and museums. He holds a degree in psychology from Lesley University, resides in Littleton, NH, and works with his wife, Carolyn, as Laughing Couple Interactive Storytelling.

Wonderful book! If you enjoyed the New England area rock and roll bands of the 1960s, then this book is for you! I was especially delighted reading the chapter about my family's NEWELL'S CASINO! The author makes the 1960s come alive with many insightful thoughts and quotes from people who lived in that time period. There are many neat old photographs as well!

He is founder and editor-in-chief of the Sherman Oaks Review of Books, a "channel" of the Los Angeles Review of Books, which will debut in 2016.
Steve Radlauer is the author or co-author of six books. He was a contributing editor at Spy magazine and has contributed to Esquire, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and others. This is one of the only books that explicitly provides a pragmatic approach or algorithm on how to think, in step-by-step fashion. It covers most of the basic topics taught in a logic or critical reasoning course but is much simpler to follow and does not use symbolic notations.

This is an excellent and very practical book! It is much better than Flew's "How to think Straight". I highly recommend "Clear Thinking" to anyone who wants a good introduction to the practice of critical thinking.

Good intro to logic and reason...

This is a great book for those that need to brush up on reasoning skills or as an introduction. With many full grown adults possessing little or no science and critical thinking education these days, books like these are a must-read. It is never too late to empower yourself with logic!

too simple, good for young teenagers

From the title and table of contents i expected a lot more. It indeed did cover all the topics of logic and faulty reasoning and avoidance of prejudice as listed but only in the most superfical ways. Not very many specific examples beyond common sense.

This weird-press offering is both deliriously repulsive and very well-crafted. It's a collection of short pieces -- sort of like stories, but more like wild fantasies -- that take surrealistic organ distortions, drug-infused hallucinatory sexual nightmares and grotesque organic urban-machinery delusions, to whole new levels of "Whoa! Can't believe I'm actually eating lunch while reading this." Reminiscent of J. K. Huysmans on an ether binge in Los Angeles.

Hatred is purer than "self"

Some reviewers automatically equate an empathy for or perception of things hateful/evil with SELF-hatred: "Oh, he must hate himself." This may be true in some people, and has by his own admission been true at times in M. Gira's life. But let's not be "therapeutically correct" here, okay? This is a kind of art I've yet to read anywhere else, and as a lover of horror since a young kid I'm "eating it up." But slowly -- you really can only take so much at a time. It's that good. As with Swans, he goes where no one else has gone, to my knowledge, and with this kind of impact. Only about 10% of the time are these pieces a bit "wordy," as one person said below. Get with it: It's his first book, it doesn't hinder, and he's just letting out all the stops. Look at Lovecraft!! This book to me is almost as, well, genius as the works of Thomas Ligotti, who does more philosophical-type horror. Nothing too thinky here; Gira goes for the real-life slice of horror that might be interesting to actually "see" when we come upon it. And the images! I'll close with this, from the second or third story: You know how an animal can appear to be smiling sometimes (hey, maybe they are)? Well, there's this drugged-out teen in the scruffy area around a drainage pipe he's just come out of, and he watches a dog tumble down the hillock from the freeway, where it most likely has just been hit by a car. Its leg is severed completely off, a gaping red wound, and when the dog comes to a stop its first action is to look up askance at the boy with its tongue panting out to the ground and a smile on its face. Very creepy. Many times what the author goes for in these tales is a kind of ecstasy in pain. Transcendence of ego, all that... I've never read anything like this; can't believe he did Swans and also this. Someone rerelease this book!

Giras troubled mind leaks onto paper...

This disturbing collections of short stories, musings, and seemingly random thoughts actually hovers somewhere between 3 and 4 stars, but I give Mr. Gira the benefit of the doubt. The purity of the ugliness written almost poetically on these pages becomes almost beautiful in its sick, twisted, dark, painful, pain-filled, drug-induced dislocation of mind and self.
In other words, Michael Gira is one sick little puppy. There is harmony in his savage portrayals of empty submission to torture and honestly in his slipping away of self. Brutal self loathing and a vicious need of self-punishment dominate these unpleasant tales and musings, with the sharpened sting of drug enhanced delusions of mind and body slipping away into nothingness.
Only from the mind of a tortured, clinically depressed soul could tales such as these sprout; ugly and black with poisonous fangs, sickly perverse and bitterly cruel. This collection is not for the squeamish or light hearted, or even for those looking for the bloodbath type of horror musings; however it does contain more searching of the true illness of mind and body than the merely tediously disgusting works of Poppy Z. Brite or Cara Bruce.
Michael Gira was also the singer/songwriter for the band The Swans, a dark and moody goth/industrial type band from the 80s and has done a few Cds on his own. This stories are as tortured and depressing as his music.
My major complaint was after reading about three quarters of the way through the stories, they kind of began to blend into each other. Though the descriptions were almost poetic in their brutality, they became repetitive after awhile, different wordings of the same internal and external tortures. It was a little like having your depressed friend come over and stay a little too long, going on and on about how horrible their life is. But all in all, if you want to read something even more disturbing and disjointed than Bret Easton Ellis American Psycho, pick this up. Just don't read it at night, or when you are depressed.
Also, I apologize for my punctuation, but until Amazon fixes its glitch of transforming punctuation into question marks and onehalf symbols, I find myself refraining from using them.

Original and stylish

This is one of the most refreshing books I have read in recent months. The writing is very explorative. The imagery is intricate, gruesome, organic, scatalogical. M. Gira imaginatively conveys the darker and seamier side of the psyche in his examinations of self-destruction, delusion, orgiastic excess and loss of identity. Definitively worth noticing.
