Extremely entertaining!

This story was wonderfully written. I couldn't swipe through the pages fast enough. It's just long enough for a nice escape, but it's not for the faint of heart. I would definitely peg it as an erotic horror story. For me, it was something new and exciting to read, and it was very tightly plotted and paced.

OK....I read it. I always finish what I start to read! It gave me a MAJOR EEWWWW. But I have to say it was intense and weirdly sexual. The author has real talent. I just don't find giant semi-calamari critters sexy I don't care HOW many tentacles they have!

Essential reading for any Madness fan

John Reed presents a history from the band's origins as the North London Invaders in 1976 to their breakup in 1986, through their reunion at Madstock in 1992 up to the band's 2009 magnum opus "The Liberty of Norton Folgate." The author doesn't make any judgments, but rather presents the good with the bad and lets the reader draw his or her own conclusions. I'm a diehard Madness fan, and I love them even more after reading this book.

The Ultimate Madness Story

This book is the ultimate Madness story for fans. Written long after the band broke up, it doesn't whitewash their story like books written during their heyday might have. It's extensive and honest. It provides an interesting look at the bands beginnings, their popularity during the 80s, and what they've been up to since then.

Tells you both everything and nothing about Madness

On page 235 of this book the author writes "It's difficult to ascertain whether Barson's decision [to quit the band] was due to [...] or [...] or [...] or [...] or a combination of the above". Think about this for a moment - a 536 page book about Madness and the author cannot explain one of the key - if not the key - events in the band's history. The problem here is that Reed did not actually speak to any of the members of the band while writing this book, instead relying on previously published interviews, the opinions of members of their entourage, and even album sleeve notes. What you end up with is a meticulous list of things that Madness did but without any real insight or understanding of why they did them. Shame really, as Reed displays an obvious fondness for the band and an eye for detail elsewhere. However, I've heard that Suggs' recently published autobiography does not delve too deeply into the workings of Madness, so this might be the best study of the Nutty Boys on the market. For the time being, anyway.

Some thoughts on the Sheik's Rediscovered Lover.

This was an ok romance. The Sheik, Zayn lacked substance and depth. Seemed all he saw in Ella was sex. He didn't seem to want to work at getting to know Ella as she wanted. Why didn't he tell Ella he was a Sheik. We didn't hear his thoughts on why he couldn't tell her. As for that marriage, how was Ella so out of it that she didn't realize they were being married. I just didn't get the measure of the man.

Hmmmm...MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!

I liked the idea of this book but wish I knew for certain whether he was faithful to her the 6 years. At one point he says that he should just move on like his advisers said but that every woman on his arm leaves him feeling cold. Then he talks about the heroine's passion and says he has not been able to find that since. Does that mean her passionate kisses before being left cold or has he been sleeping with others why demanding his team to find the heroine and saying he only wants her for his wife? Because to me, if you want someone that bad, you should not be with any others, especially since it was his fault that they were not together. I thought the heroine needed a backbone. She was upset but ultimately let everyone treat her like crap, especially the servants. She talks about how she does not mind fending for herself after the treatment the servants have done to her but I do not see how she survived. She is not fending and surviving for herself, she is ducking her head down and hoping to get by without getting noticed. I am not seeing her as strong but invisible and that is how she made it out of her old neighborhood. It was a good story but needs work in a few areas. It was worth the time to read it though.

Summary - This is a very good System Administration guide for use by those new to Solaris. It does assume some knowledge and experience with Unix or Linux systems in general. I recommend this book for anyone actively using Solaris 11 and not only for those charged with Administering it. Ordinary users of Solaris 11 can benefit by knowing more about what is going on behind the scenes while System Administrators will have a handy guide and text as study preparations for the Solaris Certification exams.

Review - This book is intended as a fairly comprehensive introduction to System Administration of the Oracle Solars 11 Operating Environment(OE). Calkins is quite experienced with the subject matter and has taught the material for several years and participated in the development of the Solaris Certification examinations. The book reflects this in a no nonsense approach that is concise and to the point. It is densely written and the tone is quite matter of fact. At 690 pages this volume is a handy desktop guide the Solaris 11 OE. It is also quite useful for developers or those managing their own desktop versions of this OE.

The book begins with preparations for installation and then goes directly into the details of installing the OE using both the text mode and interactive live installer on both X86 and SPARC systems. Use of the Automated Installer is not covered. Subsequent chapters introduce managing and updating software using the Solaris IPS. IPS is a package management system as one would expect to find in a modern Unix or Linux operating system. Several features of IPS that deserve some mention are the Distribution Constructor and the Incorporation feature. Both of these are noted as appropriate for larger Enterprise level multiple installation situations.

Calkins includes a chapter on booting the two different architectures in sufficient detail as to cover most situations. He also goes into the system logging aspects as a starting point for troubleshooting issues. This chapter also includes enough information regarding the System Management Facility(SMF) to get started using it. SMF is the Solaris utility that replaces the older Unix style init scripts. This is not overly comprehensive and only includes some basics of creating the SMF manifests. SMF is definitely an improvment over init scripts but as wth most things this comes at a price. Many hours of study time can be saved here in this section alone. SMF represents a better and more carefully engineered way to manage the systems processes.

Follow on chapters describe in sufficient detail the Administration of Storage devices and chapter 5 is a good introduction to the Zettabyte File System ZFS. ZFS represents one of the most compelling arguments for utilizing Solaris. This chapter alone is about 100 pages of very detailed information and is invaluable for anyone that needs to deal with ZFS. Oracle has several volumes of guides on ZFS for more detailed information but this guide is sufficient as a detailed introduction.

Chapter 6 describes the administration of Solaris Zones which is the preferred virtualization environment for Solaris 11. Other reviewers have noted the lack of coverage in this book on VirtualBox. Chapter 7 covers User and Security Administration. Again the security aspects of Solaris 11 make a compelling argument for the OE. The remaining 3 chapters include Managing System Processes, the Solaris 11 Network Environment and Network File Systems.

Conclusion - Having used and Administered Solaris 11 on both SPARC and X86 machines I can fully appreciate the effort that has been put into this book and the detail that is so readily apparent. The information is presented in a very methodical and straightforward manner that reflects Calkins' experience teaching the subject matter for many years.

Outstanding and essential!

From the perspective of presenting a top-down, very contemporary, articulate, complete, and thoroughly well-produced book, this reference gives you a handy all-in-one guide to system administration on Oracle Solaris 11.1. All the major and important system administration activities and procedures, as well as some minor facts which might seem trivial at first, but are actually very important, are covered in a clear and cogent way. If you had to wade through the huge volume of documentation provided by Oracle that comes with the software ( or use your Google-Fu), just to find out the details of some small fact or technique, you would realize how powerful this book really is. It will make your life with Solaris easier, like it did mine.

Just a few examples: there is a section on dealing with removable media such as USB devices, drives, thumb drives. There is excellent coverage of Secure Shell, how to start it up, manage it, etc.. Those are practical and contemporary subjects that a modern UNIX System Administration book must cover. Also, there is extensive coverage of how to add packages to your base system via the command line, which is a very critical, practical System Administration topic!

A tremendous added benefit- ZFS is covered and explained completely and beautifully!

Even if this book cost 3 times what Amazon is charging, you must have it.

UNIX: The Textbook

Edited 4/7/14- A big benefit of using Solaris 11.1 instead of OpenIndiana (May the Computer Gods forgive me for espousing a commercial system over a freeware system) is that the IPS GUI Package Manager on Solaris 11.1 has access to more packages that actually can be installed on your system. Even though the author recommends and heavily illustrates using a command line version of the IPS Package Manager, I found that with the default Gnome desktop GUI and IPS GUI, I could download and install Python 2.7.3 with Tkinter built into it from the Solaris repository in a couple of easy steps. Very similar to using the command line pkg package management system in PC-BSD or FreeBSD to get new packages from the FreeBSD Repository.

Edited 10/15/14- I'm into virtualization now, and it seems the common shortcoming of documentation on zones (this book included) is that no one tells you how to log into the zone from the Internet using ssh, FTP, or telnet, or how to actually install an application in the zone! For example, what IP address do you use to ssh into a zone running on a Solaris 11.2 machine, from somewhere on your LAN or the Internet? And as far as installing an application, I don't mean a full web server stack, just some simple app that you don't trust and want to put in a zone to test. This book shows you how to create and administrate zones (it is an administration book after all), but not how to actually use them in some simple cases! After all, it does do that with zfs. I'm hoping that the authors' advanced book will do that. http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/articles/servers-storage-admin/o11-092-s11-zones-intro-524494.html is a web page at Oracle that has an excellent intro to zones, and shows in a few easy steps how to add apache-22 to a zone! Bravo! And the Oracle web page also adds the zone to rpool on the vdev that Solaris boots from- Dr. Calkins in his zone intro creates a new zpool on another hard disk for the zone. I don't quite get the rational for that.

Good introduction

I have bought this book to get a more structured introduction to Solaris administration (compared to the "read man pages on demand" approach). The first chapter may be a little scary because the author presents a few commands without further explanation, such as prtconf, and svcs. The images above those commands show screenshots of the installation process, i.e., are totally unrelated. Without my prior knowledge of Solaris 10 (and some hours of playing with Solaris 11), I would definitely be worried about the chapters that follow.

The organisation of the content is IMHO not optimal - at least in some cases. "Advanced" topics like Boot Environments (BE) are mentioned in one paragraph and are then used to explain how the package management works. The actual BE topic follows after that. Again, without my previous knowledge, I would have had no idea how it works and what it is good for (for example the BE backup when installing packages).

Despite the negatives mentioned earlier, the explanations are good and easy to follow, especially compared to the Oracle Books, which focus on experienced readers. Important commands and their options are explained with examples, which are easy to reproduce. Furthermore, the examples animate to play with the system - a very important criterion for such a book! I was surprised how much time I can spend with the pkg command without getting bored (package management has been one of the topics I didn't like in previous Solaris versions!)... very positive!

The book contains minor (copy and paste) errors, e.g., in section "Search for a Software Package", it states "Use the pkg search command to... The syntax for the pkg info command is as follows: pkg search ...".

The book covers both SPARC and x86 Solaris, differences in commands/procedures are explained immediately. OpenBoot got enough attention, so that SPARC users can handle their machines, too. Along with man pages and a Solaris installation to play with, this book is quite nice. However, a reader with absolutely no Solaris background, such as Linux users, may find some sections difficult to understand. For me, on the other hand, it fits quite well, and I am happy that I have bought it. Reorder the content and you will get 5 stars from me.

First of its kind

I decided to purchase this item despite lack of information online about this product. I figured it was going to be a surprise. As the previous poster has said, this is a nice add-on to your studies and daily organization. However, it definitely isn't a must and I had a hard time deciding if I would keep it because the product is not as polished as one would expect. However, I like that it's a unique product. There are no other planners out there for MCAT study planning, at least not one that I know of that could specifically apply to the new MCAT.

I like the cover design and texture. It is like a rubber-coated/matte feel. The downside is that it smudges and wears easily, although it looks and feels nice. The first content page you see is a letter from Amareen. She goes on for about 6-7 pages with all her study tips, some of which I will be trying. Others seem very extreme or specific to her program and supplements she sells. For example, I doubt I will be following the diet advice or advice about brain supplements as they require you to purchase very specific products. She recommends eating Oatfit every 1.5 hours, and it sounds like she is recommending Oatfit to be the primary part of your diet. This whole section could have been clearer and proofread more before printing. Also, the font seems to be point 8 or smaller, and I can't figure out a rationale for this since the 7th page is only about 4 lines long.

Next, you get to the "Overview of the Daily Plan". This is basically a two column chart that goes to day 365, with a few extra days to spare since the second column is blank on the last page. I doubt I will use this part much since there is nothing particularly appealing or organizational about the way it is laid out and there is not much space to write your plan that day (if you can summarize your plan in 1-2 words, 3 if you write small and the words aren't long, but they often tend to be in the sciences). You can just print out some free monthly calendars if you are really inclined to write out your plans for the next 365 days, but I would recommend just planning month by month :)

Then you get to the bulk of this planner, which are the daily sheets starting from 5am and ending at 4am. Flip this over and you will see the end of day review, where you can record hours studied, test percentages, stress, motivation, and distraction levels and a spot to write general notes and revisions to the plan. It's kind of a shame that these two pages aren't facing each other. I might just skip the first schedule sheet so that I can have the end of the day sheet on the left and use the facing schedule sheet (meant for the next day) on the right. I like the daily review sheets and there's a lot of them in there that they don't feel scarce, like informal worksheets you can freely write on should feel.

Amareen ends with 100 quotes for bad days. This leads me to another suggestion, which is a quote or tip every day. Because there is already one quote repeated everyday on the daily pages (which also seems to need copy editing). Along with this theme of repetition, the header of the book lets you fill in your test date and goal score, which is a nice touch, but I doubt I'll be filling that in 756 times on every page of the book!

All-in-all, 3.5 stars rounded to 4 based on conventions, and the fact I decided to keep it. I'm not sure the outcome would have been the same if I had purchased or found this elsewhere- there are just too many oddities in the layout as mentioned. Since things worked out like so, I do see myself making use of this book and it wearing out and becoming well-loved. It's a bit bulky being 700-800 pages, so it will likely stay in one designated spot as I believe it's designed. Good idea and a good first copy that could benefit from some revisions/improvements. I commend the effort to make something new that is not on the market yet and believe they will come out with many improved versions. I wanted to let other people interested in this know exactly what they are getting before purchase.

For all of you premed students, I know how tough and stressful life can be, so why not make it easier with this baby? One of the best textbooks I own. I usually rent texts for courses and send them back at the end of semesters, but this is one I'm happy to have bought. An excellent introduction to the building blocks of the brain and their clinical significance.

the book reads easily, explains concepts well

I bought this book not for a course or exam, but to answer some specific questions. As a clinical physician I thought it would be a reference text only. Now I find I can't put it down and have started to read it all the way through. Although dense with information in nearly every sentence, the book reads easily, explains concepts well, and is worth every penny twice over. I highly recommend this to anyone in medicine or pharmacology. I only wish it was available when I was a student.

Non-Profit Management 101

As usual Peter Drucker has come up with an enlightening piece of management theory. This book is for anyone entering the world of non-profit.
Mr. Drucker details the unique motivations of the non-profit organization and explains the management methods necessary to navigate this organization type.
Another great work by Drucker. Even if you are not in the non-profit world I recommend that you read this.

A strech...

Because I am a big fan of Drucker on all his other writings, it hurts me to say that he strayed a bit from his forte on this one. While helpful and useful in a general way, I find the book a bit too theoretical and not so practical. I found "Mananging a Nonprofit Organization" by Thomas Wolf A LOT more useful and practical. Drucker is still my hero, though... :)

VueScan is the world's most widely used software interface for digitizing film and prints on flatbed and film scanners. This powerful yet affordable program supports over 1500 scanners and 321 digital camera RAW file types, and is available for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux.

Much more than a simple scanner program, VueScan allows you to perform functions such as color restoration, adding sharpening filters, adjusting white balance, rotating images, and batch scanning multiple images. It also provides output to a variety of formats including TIFF, JPEG, and searchable PDF files (even all three simultaneously). The Pro version outputs to the RAW format and provides options for color adjustments, and more.

Despite its popularity, the documentation for VueScan does not provide enough information to use the full power of the system and makes it difficult to get started. The VueScan Bible is the missing manual for new, experienced, and prospective users of VueScan.

About the Author

Sascha Steinhoff is a computer expert by training and a photographer by passion. He used several rainy seasons in Galway, Ireland to learn everything he needed to know about scanners and scanning software. He soon realized that a good scan requires as much work and know-how as a good camera shot, and that a scanning workflow is essential to get the job done efficiently.

Sascha recently gave up his position as an editor of a leading German technical magazine to move to Bangkok, Thailand, where he is currently working as a freelance journalist and project manager.

Perhaps better suited for beginners

I've used VueScan for several years on a few different scanners. I've also used other programmes (notably Silverfast), so I wouldn't consider myself a beginner when it comes to scanning, and not so much so for Vuescan either. I was already familiar with the basics of scanning transmissive (E6, C41) and reflective media, scanner and film profiling. In purchasing this book, I was sold by the tag line: "Everything you need to know for perfect scanning". I expected this book to provide advanced tips on getting the most out of Vuescan and my scanner. Specifically, I was hoping for workflow suggestions, curves/profiling information for specific film emulsions and enhanced/expanded descriptions of the nitty gritty in Vuescan.

After reading the book over, my impression of it is that this is ideal for those new to Vuescan and scanning. The first half of the book introduces the reader to scanning with information on Vuescan interspersed within the text. Chapter 7 onwards starts getting interesting as workflow information is suggested for several typical media types. These workflows though aren't as much a discussion of advanced workflow options or trade-offs, or suggestions on how various Vuescan settings might affect/improve/detract from the desired output for the selected media type, rather it is a cookbook style step-by-step instruction on how to scan. In my opinion everything in the first seven chapters of this book can be easily found on the Hamrick site or via a quick survey of various online sources on scanning. What I did find very useful were Chapters 8 through 13 - chapters with reference information on each option in Vuescan. These chapters provide detailed information on the various settings as well as the author's insights. These are useful and are something that I find myself going back to occasionally.

To conclude, I think this is a great book for beginners to scanning or Vuescan, but those already versed with the Vuescan or advanced "scanners" might be better off elsewhere.

Helpful, but Not Definitive

If all you want from a scanner is to copy some letters or an occasional magazine article you probably have no need for this book or for VueScan software, for that matter. But if you need to preserve some old photographic prints or even digitize some images captured on film this book will be of interest.

What this book does is to provide information on VueScan software: what it is, how the interface looks, a detailed explanation of resolution, file formats available for output, input media, special techniques like multiscanning, and suggested workflows. There is also a detailed explanation of each of the VueScan menus.

This review is not a comparison between VueScan and SilverFast, another leading brand of scanner software. But I can most assuredly say that unless your scanner comes with either VueScan or SilverFast, either will do better than the manufacturer's software for your scanner. One might wonder whether this book is needed, since the VueScan software comes with a very helpful interface that will guide you through scanning and an online help resource. If you really want to get the most from your scanner and VueScan, the book is helpful. For example, even though the manufacturer provided software probably didn't mention it, it is possible to get an HDR-like scan from your image, using multiexposure. The VueScan User's Guide, which can be downloaded, explains how to do this, but the Bible does a slightly better job, and since I found it easier to read through the book than the PDF, I discovered this procedure more quickly.

There are elements of VueScan that may be useful to the photographer which are not mentioned in the book that are touched on by the VueScan site. For example, for the best results, one's scanner should be profiled using an IT8 target. The book doesn't advise where to procure an IT8 target. The VueScan website provides links. If you have Photoshop on your computer, VueScan's installation will provide a Twain file so that you can call up VueScan from within Photoshop and import your scan directly into image processing. The book doesn't mention this (or if it does I couldn't find it; there is no index).

Ultimately, photographers who want to get the most from VueScan will want to read this book. But they should not expect to learn everything there is to know about VueScan. They will still have to peruse the VueScan web site and other on-line commentaries to which it links.

Just what I needed

I've had a well-known brand of scanner for three or four years. The results were so disappointing that I had basically given up on using it with the manufacturer's software. But I have a large collection of photos (printed in various sizes, slides and negatives of just about every brand)which I still wished to scan. So I tried out Vuescan a couple of months back.
I was immediately getting better results, and have started rescanning the pictures I did previously. The documentation that comes with Vuescan is comprehensive but unclear to the first-time user. It was enough to get me going, and gave reasonable results. But there was a lot of guess-work involved, I still didn't really know what was happening under the hood, and I'm sure some my improved scans are still sub-optimal.
This book was exactly what I needed. It spends quite a bit of time on the technicalities of scanning, before getting to the practicalities of using Vuescan. The reward for paying attention to this stuff was that it made everything much clearer when I got to working with the program itself.
The book is quite comprehensive, but briefer than the Vuescan Manual. It is well-organised and clearly written. I changed some of my default settings in line with Steinhoff's recommendations, and my scans were visibly better again. After reading this book, I found the Vuescan documentation much easier to follow.
I have no complaints about this book. Every user is different, of course, aso this book won't satisfy everybody. But Steinhoff's book was exactly what I needed.
