Excellent life and games of an all-time great
By Derek Grimmell
For the record, I do not own the gold standard of Capablanca books, Winter's outstanding biography and games collection, mostly due to the price. Without this it's possible that I overlooked some factual inaccuracies in the present volume. Nonetheless, I'm very impressed with this book. It is both a biography and a sort of games collection, with 87 games or game fragments mixed in with a detailed biography and description of the tournament circumstances in which each game was played. The annotations to the games or fragments are not computer-generated lines, but instructional comments of the sort that is designed to increase the student's understanding of the game or of the thought processes of great players. At times these notes appear superficial; for example, Alatortsev--Capablanca, the 69th game in the book, the note to White's 13th move, Nxc6, simply says "White might have considered Nd3", without any description of why this move might be considered. However, the authors generally do well with explaining wrong-rook decisions and castling decisions. Along the way they give many, many anecdotes and descriptions of Capablanca's personality and behavior, such as his comments on chess in the USSR while playing at Moscow 1935 or the intricacies of the match negotiations with Lasker, followed by mutual accusations and then apologies.

Overall, I found this book to be a great resource on Capablanca, more weighted to being an excellent biography than being an excellent annotated games collection. If you really want both in one place, go with Winter's book; if you want to understand Capablanca's play as thoroughly as possible, probably start with The Immortal Games of Capablanca.

A Great Book!
By gary roe
An excellent addition to the many fine books written on Capablanca. Isaak and Vladimir Linder, along with Russel Enterprises, have brought Capablanca to life again, chronicling Capa's amazing history combined with their informative analysis of his games. The book is complete with Capablanca's Career Tournament and Match Record, Tournament Crosstables (although they forgot the Match Crosstables), Player and Opening Index and easy to follow Algebraic Notation.

Fine Blend of Biography and Games Collection
By R. Tobias
This is a fine, well done book on Capablanca. I would classify it chiefly as a biography, but it also a games collection. Unlike a book like Golumbek's or Reinfeld's, though, this book is much more heavy on the biographical details of Capablanca's life and games. It makes a good complement to the standard games collections by filling in more details of Capa's rather interesting life. For example, I was intrigued to learn of Capa's graciousness in resigning the 34th game of their World Championship match, and that Capa and Alekhine embraced each other at the closing ceremony. A very ironic and poignant moment, given the great acrimony between the two for the rest of their lives. The games are fairly satisfyingly annotated, but annotations can be light in places. Capa's own description of his winning plan against Nimzovich in their NY 1927 game (game 51 in the book) is a stunning example of his genius at breaking down chess positions. A total of 87 games and fragments are covered. Tables of Capa's match and tournament records are given. Here is a fascinating fact: not counting the '27 match w/ Alekhine, Capa as an adult played four other matches, with Marshall, Lasker, Kostic and Euwe. The results of those top flight contests for Capa: 19 wins, 32 draws, and only 1 loss!! If you have Winter's great compendium of Capa games and facts, and some of the other classic games collections, you maybe do not need this book. If you enjoy 'all things Capa', or are just starting your chess library (or don't want to pay the steep price for the Winter book), you will want to add this book to your collection.
