A good book to read for Post Keynesian true believers

This book contains about a 100 2-10 page articles written by Post Keynesian economists(PKers).Post Keynesianism is a school of economics founded by Cambridge economists Joan Robinson,Richard Kahn,Austin Robinson and their American supporter,John Kenneth Galbraith in the early 1970's.Two of their acolytes,Sidney Weintraub and Paul Davidson,founded The Journal of Post Keynesian Economics in the late 1970's.The purpose of the Post Keynesian school is to correct the many technical errors they claim(with no supporting evidence)were committed by John Maynard Keynes in 1936 when he wrote the General Theory(GT).The PKers claim that Keynes was a brilliant ,intuitive innovator and discoverer of new economic ideas who lacked the capability to use mathematical analysis and microeconomic theory to present a formal,technical analysis of what it was he meant to say.PKers concentrate their study of Keynes's GT on chapters 2 and 3 of the GT and chapters III and IV of Keynes's A Treatise on Probability.They claim that Keynes recognized that economic analysis could not be based on formal mathematical modeling.The same holds for applications of probability.They claim that Keynes recognized that ,in general,no numbers could be used in the estimation and calculation of probabilities.All probabilistic analysis in economics,social science, liberal arts,and every day practical decision making must be done using ordinal relationships,which can be done only in some instances due to the existence of uncertainty about the future.At least half of the essays in this book just reexpress what I have summarized above.The rest of the review will be devoted to correcting the errors made in a number of the selections taken at random.Toporowski,in the selection Kaleckian Economics,claims that the problem with Keynes's GT is that the"...microeconomic foundations..are largely absent in Keynes's General Theory.(Their absence had facilitated the neoclassical and monetarist interpretation of Keynesian unemployment as being due to wage inflexibility)..."(2003,p.228).Any competent mathematician can find Keynes's completely worked out microeconomic analysis in chapters 19,20,and 21 of the GT.Toporowski's error reappears in the selection "Effective Demand",written by M.Setterfield.He confuses and conflates Keynes's D,Z,and Y functions.For example,he claims that Z=pO where p is an expected price and O equals real output.Keynes defines D=pO five times on pp.283-284 of the GT,while Z=P +wN,where P equals expected economic profit,w equals the current money wage,and N represents aggregate employment.Only E.Tymoigne's selection,Expectations,escapes error.Finally,O'Donnell's selection,Treatise on Probability,repeats the F.Ramsey error,made many times by Ramsey in two book reviews of Keynes's TPin 1922 and 1926,respectively,that Keynesian probabilities,in general, do not use any numbers.Thus,a decision maker must rely on"Ordinal comparison,which generates the much bigger class of non-numerical probabilities..."(2003,p.362).This directly contradicts Keynes's definition of nonnumerical probability as a probability that lies between two numbers,an upper limit and a lower limit,given on p.160 of chapter 15 of the TP.O'Donnell's errors show up in a number of other selections,such as Non-ergodicity,Uncertainty,and Liquidity.These errors,however,will not matter to the Post Keynesian true believer.

About the Author
The Benedictine Nuns of Perpetual Adoration are a monastic community with a ministry dedicated to prayer. Founded by Mother Mary Felber in 1874, the nuns now live under a Rule and a Prioress, and are strongly devoted to the practice of Eucharistic Adoration. Their monasteries are located in Missouri, Arizona, and Wyoming, and their dwellings are united under a central Congregation. The Benedictines support themselves by working with altar bread, correspondence, and handcrafts. Their largest monastery, located in Clyde, Missouri, houses seventy-four sisters, and also serves as a central administration and health care facility. In addition to St. Michael the Archangel, the Benedictines have also published Spirit and Life magazine and run the Monastery Creations gift shop.

This book goes into more detail about each of the capital sins. It really helps understand what these really mean, versus whatever our misconceptions may be. About the Author

Serope Kalpakjian is professor emeritus of mechanical and materials engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is the author of Mechanical Processing of Materials and co-author of Lubricants and Lubrication in Metalworking Operations (with E.S. Nachtman); both of the first editions of his textbooks Manufacturing Processes

for Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology have received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award. He has conducted research in various areas of manufacturing, is the author of numerous technical papers and articles in handbooks and encyclopedias, and has edited several conference proceedings. He also has been editor and co-editor of various technical journals and has served on the editorial board of Encyclopedia Americana.

Among other awards, Professor Kalpakjian has received the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation Best Paper Award, the Excellence in Teaching Award from lIT, the ASME Centennial Medallion, the International Education

Award from SME, A Person of the Millennium Award from lIT; the Albert Easton White Outstanding Teacher Award from ASM International, and the 2016 SME Gold Medal. The Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, by SME, in

2001, was named after him. Professor Kalpakjian is a Life Fellow ASME, Fellow SME, Fellow and Life Member ASM International, Fellow Emeritus the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), and is a founding member

and past president of NAMRI. He is a graduate of Robert College (High Honor, Istanbul), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute Technology.

Steven R. Schmid is professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and conducts research in the general areas of manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. He received his

B.S. degree from Illinois Institute of Technology (with Honors) and Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University, all in mechanical engineering. He has received numerous awards, including the John T. Parsons Award from SME, the Newkirk Award from ASME, the Kaneb Center Teaching Award (three times), and the Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Professor Schmid served as the President of the North American Manufacturing Research Institution (NAMRI, 2015-2016) and was appointed the first Academic Fellow at the Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office, U.S. Department of Commerce, where he helped design the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation. Dr. Schmid is the author of over 140 technical papers, and has co-authored the texts Fundamentals of Machine Elements, Fundamentals of Fluid Film Lubrication, and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology.

About the Author

James E. Maddux, PhD, is University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He is the former editor of the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology and former director of the clinical doctoral program at George Mason University.

Barbara A. Winstead, PhD, is Professor of Psychology and Chair of the Psychology Department at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. She is also the former director of clinical training for the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology.

Good update of the previous edition

Has more recent content than the 2008 second edition. There are some sections that could use more updates. For example, the chapter on substance use disorders cites use statistics from the 90s. Additionally, with the upcoming release of the DSM-5 in May of this year, it is likely that there will be a new edition written relatively soon to accommodate the changes. I would wait or buy a used version if you need it before the next edition comes out.

Some chapters are super biased, criticising DSM without concrete evidence instead of providing a balanced view of pros and cons. Biased writing ends up being too unscientific.

Finally! A Readable Textbook.

In Academia associated with counseling the grounds of the hallowed educational institutions are littered with crushingly dull, data-filled tomes that are read only because the reading is required. Editors Maddux and Winstead have published a remarkable exception. Drawing on authors and experts from all over, the editors have assembled a coherent, readable, informative, and engaging book.

I know that it is usual for many students to sell their books once a course is completed. This one is a keeper that I can foresee as a frequent reference.

One note: This book was published in anticipation of the release of the DSM-5. Now that the release has happened, I hope Maddux and Winstead team up to update this to the 4th edition.

The term “urban ecology” has become a buzzword in various disciplines, including the social and natural sciences as well as urban planning and architecture. The environmental humanities have been slow to adapt to current theoretical debates, often excluding human-built environments from their respective frameworks. This book closes this gap both in theory and in practice, bringing together “urban ecology” with ecocritical and cultural ecological approaches by conceptualizing the city as an integral part of the environment and as a space in which ecological problems manifest concretely. Arguing that culture has to be seen as an active component and integral factor within urban ecologies, it makes use of a metaphorical use of the term, perceiving cities as spatial phenomena that do not only have manifold and complex material interrelations with their respective (natural) environments, but that are intrinsically connected to the ideas, imaginations, and interpretations that make up the cultural symbolic and discursive side of our urban lives and that are stored and constantly renegotiated in their cultural and artistic representations. The city is, within this framework, both seen as an ecosystemically organized space as well as a cultural artifact. Thus, the urban ecology outlined in this study takes its main impetus from an analysis of examples taken from contemporary culture that deal with urban life and the complex interrelations between urban communities and their (natural and built) environments.
