Meh...

Easy Evenings by Mary Calmes (MM/Romance)

Hmm...well, I gotta say it, though I hate to, but since this is an HONEST review...I gotta say that this is my least favorite of the Mangrove series and my least favorite book so far by Mary Calmes. Mizz Mary, I adore reading your stories, but this one just didn't do much for me. I would have given it a 2, but because it's by this author and because the book had some romantic factors I've come to expect from this author, I'm giving it 3 stars.

The 4th book of the series is about Laz and how he ends up with a 3 year old daughter as soon as the book start. That part wasn't even in the blurb. No hints at all so I was surprised. His daughter "Kitty" was cute, but how she talked was very grown-up. It was like a 14 year old in a 3 year old body or something. I wasn't convinced.

The romance between Laz and Britton wasn't convincing either. Britton found out that Laz didn't want to quit being a rent boy not because he enjoyed it, but to provide for his ungrateful sister and mother. Yeah, he found that out, but I think he was all over Laz too fast. I mean, this was the guy you served a restraining order against...

Idk, like I said, this didn't do much for me, but I still look forward to reading other Mary Calmes books in the future.

This isn't romance

I loved Blue Days, the first book in the Mangrove Stories series. The second story, Quiet Nights, was also a decent, but I thought the third one, Sultry Sunset, was pointless and disjointed. While Easy Evenings is an improvement over that, there is still something missing in the story that left me ultimately dissatisfied: ROMANCE.
Mary Calmes has a strong tendency to write about long-time friends suddenly becoming lovers, usually with affections well-established before the stories even begin. Sometimes this can work well in a full-length book where the author can still build the relationship and characters despite what else is going on in the plot (the Marshals series comes to mind). However, when constrained to a novella length, these stories leave no time for even the most perfunctory of relationships between people who are nominally the main characters.
To be sure, Easy Evenings is not a bad story, but it is not the romance described in the Amazon blurb. This is a story of Lazlo getting custody of the daughter he never knew he had, coming to terms (quickly, and with minimal angst) with his terrible family, and, incidentally, hooking back up with his ex. Easy Evenings does not just contain the cliched InstaLove to which so many stories resort, it has InstaLove told via brief flashback which is mostly a description of a party and sex. Britton was a non-entity for 90 percent of this, and when you consider the book is only about 80 pages long, that's not much time for character development. Add in the negative perceptions of Britton carried over from Quiet Nights, and the whole love angle was a non-starter for me.
Blue Days and Quiet Nights worked because they were primarily romances, and the plots' details actively brought the characters together. Hopefully in future novellas, Calmes will get back to the core component of romance- the couple- and leave the detailed plots to the stories with the length to support it.

This Novella was sadly just not for me...

So having not read any of the previous books in this series I will admit to being a little lost but I rolled with it.
I really liked Lazlo's character and felt bad for him after having a mom and sister like he does...
What I was not a fan of was the misunderstanding that broke up Lazlo and Britton then the way all was just forgiven like no big deal you got a restraining order out on me I still love you. That made no sense to me at all and then everything moved so fast after that and they are living together it was really just honestly crazy to me.
So while I liked Lazlo's character and some of this story I was not a fan of Britton and how fast everything moved after that. So I am sad to say as much as I have love Mary Calmes books this one was just not for me..

Interesting read...

I had to buy this textbook for my sociology class. I never really care for textbooks for school but in this case it was very interesting. It wasn't like some of the other textbooks that are very dry reading. It's easy to follow and keep up with the chapters and the material that is being given. I thought with the structure and syllabus of my class it fit very well. And although I wouldn't probably read it again it isn't something that I wouldn't recommend anyone else getting if they wanted to.

Doesn't fully live up to its promising title

In fact, the title really says it all! The book seems to take up a lot of chapters providing the "proof" that talent is going to waste because graduates from top universities want to get paid gobs of money to work for big corporations in New York and Boston. No doubt some of these folks would create a lot of value if they chose entrepreneurial routes, but I have to wonder if someone who falls into that category really has what it takes to do the dirty work that is required when you are an entrepreneur. I'm also pretty darn offended that the book is focused solely on top universities. And by top, I really mean top: Harvard, Yale, etc. What about the millions of smart people who graduate from state schools, liberal arts colleges, etc, who do quite a lot for their communities and for the economy.

I think the real message should be, we should encourage EVERYONE to develop the competencies to become entrepreneurial: problem solving, risk taking, excellent oral and written communication skills, financial common sense, creating, innovating, leading .... Those who choose to use these skills to develop new entities (for profit and non profit) will do a lot of good. Those that use these skills within an existing company will also be doing their part to move the country and economy forward.

The second half of the book is an advertisement for Venture for America, and it sounds like a great organization. Again too focused on recruiting from a very small number of select schools, but that's their perogative. I want to duplicate it on a smaller scale at my college, where I co-direct the entrepreneurship center.

Bottom line, decent book, but don't expect anything earth shattering.

Read this book and give it to as many people as possible!

I'm one of the typical college graduates that Andrew highlights in the book. I'm the type that was wooed by top financial services and management consulting firms my junior and senior years in college and then graduated with an offer in hand to join one of them in New York City. I took the path well traveled, because it was safe and respected by everyone around me.

Had this book been in my hands (and had VFA been around) while in the thick of the job search in college, who knows... maybe I would have started my working life differently.

This should be required reading for all college students everywhere.

Phenomenal motivation for joining a startup

Should be required reading for any entrepreneurship class. Yang lays out the jaw-dropping statistics of how many smart ambitious students are squandering their potential in pursuit of money/prestige/security. As an engineering student it was an incredible reminder to pursue an industry that builds and creates, not just analyzes! Yang builds incredible value for why individuals of all walks of life should invest in America by creating something (anything!) instead of walking the well-trodden paths.

An inspiring read for anyone considering a start-up, and an essential read for anyone considering law/finance/consulting!

Common sense tips that we often overlook but could be better written

This is not the best grammatically written book but the points still come across loud and clear. As a manager, I struggle with motivating my team and dealing with conflict. Actually, the majority of my working hours in my office are spent dealing with the team. So learning how to effectively build your team is very important. I will go back to this book and re-read the key points because as it suggests, it is best to start with 1 or 2 than trying to implement all at once. I’m excited to view the Ted Talk it refers to as well. Most of the points made in this book seem like common sense and the author points this out. However, it is also pointed out that we tend to overlook the simple, common sense actions we could be making that can give us a very high return on investment of time. One of the biggest duh moments I learned from this book was using getting the work finished as the motivator instead of using money as the motivator. Instead of worrying about and paying for butt in seat time, the book points out that people will be much more motivated to get the job finished if the pay is the same and they can be released after the work is complete. Personally, this is a big motivator for me. Money being equal, to have the extra time to do other things because I pushed hard and got my work done instead of dragging it out seems like a huge incentive. If you are looking for quick tips to implement in your team and can get past the manner the book was written, you will find quite a bit of value in this book.

I have to admit, I wasn't thrilled with this book. It has potential but it's just far too short and barely scratches the surface. In addition, it needs a good edit - the grammar isn't great and there are a number of misspellings. There are some good points made in the areas of leadership, motivation and core success principles, but it's hard to get past the ESL-style writing.

Estoy disfrutando mucho el contenido de este libro, a diferencia de muchos libros que ya se han escrito sobre las constelaciones familiares. Puedes encontrar no solamente informacion de los enredos sistemicos y las dinamica que muy a menudo se dan entre los miembros de una familia. Sino que a su vez, podras leer sobre fundamentos de la psicologia que explican como y porque se dan estas dinamica en la psique humana, Permitiendonos tener mas claridad y comprension de las situaciones que se pueden presentar en determinados escenarios. Tambien presenta casos reales y a la vez sugerencias para que tu mismo/a puedas aplicar en determinadas situaciones que se se esten presentando en tu vida. Realmente es un libro con una mezcla de conocimiento y practica escrito con mucha fluidez y un lenguaje facil de comprender.

El trabajo con constelaciones familiares ha hecho grandes cambios en mi vida.
El solo hecho de leer material desde esta perspectiva, me ha permitido hacer mejoras a través de la toma de consciencia, el agradecímiento, el respeto y el amor. O al menos, tener en el punto de mira estas alternativas para mirar mi realidad y el mundo que me rodea.
Comencé a seguir la página en FB de la autora, quien generosamente hace regalos todo el tiempo con frases cortas pero contundentes acerca de cómo mirar nuestros procesos de vida para estar en el mundo. Me ha gustado mucho.
Así que compre llena de expectativas y muy emocionada el libro, porque está escrito desde el punto de vista de constelaciones familiares y porque la autora me había acompañado por medio de FB, sin saberlo, en mis procesos de vida.
Antes de comprarlo leí su currículum, pues tristemente, en ocasiones he comprado material por esta vía que me ha resultado una completa decepción. Y a veces, hasta una grosera estafa.
Y debo decir que me pareció completamente profesional y con una formación por demás llena de recursos para hacer de su trabajo algo serio y respetuoso con sus clientes. Poner la vida emocional y hasta espiritual en la guía de otros, es un salto al abismo. Un acto de fe.
El libro ha sido una magnífica sorpresa. Muy bien escrito, claro, de fácil lectura, lo que no quiere decir simple o banal, y además con ejercicios que hacen del uso de la teoría una verdadera caja de herramientas para trabajar aquello que es de nuestro interés trabajar.
Solo puedo recomendar su lectura.
