Walking and knowing the path

I have given this full marks because studying it is a deeply moving experience for me. However, the book has no star maps, a serious omission because much of the poem and even some of the commentary is mumbo jumbo without an aid to visualization. For example, the commentary often provides star co-ordinates, such as constellation alpha, beta etc, and even touches on star magnitudes. However, any good amateur astronomy book should cover this lapse.

As they say, there is a difference between walking a path and knowing the path. If astronomy is knowing the stars, the poem 'Phaenomena' is a walk through them. But the walk is a stumble without guidance, in this case provided by Kidd's text, supplemented with star maps. It has enabled me to appreciate not only the ancient popularity of this poem but, by extension, all didactic poetry.

As with other texts in this Cambridge series, the scholarship is impeccable. Kidd provides a bibliography as long as your fat aunt's panties, with excellent background material on the poet's history and prosody, the manuscript tradition etc, and his line by line commentary deals with textual, historical and astronomical issues in good, clear English. It is a bit expensive but worth every cent.

Panic is not a word I thought would ever be commonplace in my life. I was 29 when I had my first panic attack. Our house had flooded due to a freak rain storm some months before and while we were able to get everything cleaned up and sealed up I was pacing in the basement. I was walking back and forth down the hall and all I could see in my mind was flood water. The floor was dry. It hadn't even started raining outside and I was pacing. I kept thinking I saw shiny spots on the corner of the bathroom or the laundry room. I was putting my cheek to the carpet thinking I was feeling water on my face. I suddenly felt like I couldn't breathe. My stomach was tightening and I wanted to vomit. I became dizzy and had to sit down on the floor. I was having a panic attack. This would be the first of many to come.

I didn't acknowledge what was happening. I had grown up imagining things like panic attacks as signs of weakness and inferiority. Who was a man, that couldn't control his own mind? Little did I know that this would be the thing God would use to help test my trust in Him and shape my faith like it had not yet been shaped.

My dad died.
I got a new job.
We had our second daughter.
I had a new boss in a new department with new expectations.
And I was trying to save the world.
And I was failing.

I woke up one morning and felt like a ton of bricks. I wasn't sick. I wasn't tired. I just didn't care. I didn't want to move. I began to cry for no reason. My wife was in the shower and I laid in bed crying like a baby. I got so mad. I couldn't pin point the why behind my tears. My anger made me more mad which made me cry harder. I got up and got dressed and went to work.

We had a party with family and friends. I remember sitting at the table and feeling like I just had to leave. I needed to not be with anyone. I went into the front room of our house and sat for what I thought was about five minutes. My wife came into check on me. "You've been in here for an hour. Are you OK?" How could she know? "I'm fine." I shrugged it off. I didn't want to bother her with my burdens.

This happened again and again. It started happening at work. I'd go into a quiet room away from my co-workers and cry. I'm a student pastor at a large and successful church. Things were going well. I felt like I couldn't tell my co-workers what was going on.

I got into an argument with a supervisor. I swore at him and yelled and acted completely out of character. I went home that day and yelled more. I was grumpy and withdrawn. I yelled at my girls. I yelled at my wife. For no reason.

Then I had a trusted friend say something to me I desperately need to hear, as it pertained to my job. "Hey, you know you can't save the world right?" I was taken back, "What do you mean?". "If you are going to put on a superhero cape and tights and save the world you do that at home. Your job could be gone tomorrow but your family will always be with you. Don't push them away."

The next day another supervisor came to me and asked me about my dad. I lost it. I began to cry.

A few weeks later I was sitting in my doctor's office. He asked me a few questions that I had only ever been on the asking side of. He asked me if I had ever thought about hurting myself. He asked me about my fears. He asked me about my family. He prescribed a little white pill. And I was beginning to feel again.

I called a friend who had struggled with panic attacks for a while. I was truthfully panicking about taking a pill for panic attacks. I had attached a negative stigma to it. He was available. He listened and he helped me realize it was ok to feel the way I was feeling. He gave me the courage to accept help.

My supervisor had offered to pay for me to go to a few sessions of counseling to talk through my fear and my grief and depression. I realized that I had never properly mourned the loss of my father. I had been running a million miles a minute since He died. I never slowed down. I never rested. I dove head first into my new job and masked my pain and grief. Counseling forced me to slow down. It forced me to deal. It forced me to be vulnerable and honest and open with myself.

Then it began to rain again. Another big storm. Water in a place we didn't catch the first time. More clean up. Nothing was damaged. We sealed things up again. And so did I. I sealed myself off. I began to constantly check weather reports. My pulse would quicken as the clouds darken. I found myself again in repetitive states of panic.

I then began to pray. I had always prayed about my circumstances. I had not prayed about my focus. I heard a podcast interview with Louie Giglio where he shared about his bouts with anxiety and depression. He shared a prayer/song he had begun to pray whenever he felt anxious. I began to pray the same prayer:

Over and over again I would pray that prayer. Things began to get better.

Truthfully I still struggle with anxiety, depression, and panic. I probably always will to one degree or another. So when I came across How To Live In Fear. I felt like the title alone was different that most books I had heard of on the topic. It focused on life. It focused on the ability to live life in the middle of fear that doesn't seem to shake. Lance writes from experience. He tells his story. He's honest and vulnerable and humorous and everything that a book on fear needs to be. He offers practical advice as a person who needs to take the very same advice. It's the best book on anxiety I've ever read. It's so important for those who struggle and the ones who love them to understand how fear works in the mind and how to help.

This is a MUST read.

Encouragement from a fellow anxiety sufferer

This is just the sort of book that the church needs. It's time that we acknowledge that we have friends in the pews and the pulpit that suffer from mental illness and that it's an illness, just like cancer and heart disease, and not a character flaw.

Far too often the church treats mental illness as a lack of faith. Christians are told to pray more, have more faith, or just get over it. When that doesn't work, believers either drift away from the church in shame or live a sort of dual, fake life of smiling exterior and hurting interior.

I love Hahn's transparency as he shares his own story, even when it's personally embarrassing. He also doesn't shy away from talking about medication, therapy, and admitting that he has a disease that has to be managed. By the time he gets to scripture and theology, he's established credibility with the reader.

Hahn, unlike some other authors, makes no guarantees that reading this book will make your anxiety and fear go away. He does offer hope and encouragement as he discusses the symptoms of anxiety, possible treatments, and management tips that help him battle anxiety triggers.

If you suffer from anxiety, this book is for you. If you know and love someone who suffers from anxiety, this book is for you.

So glad that Pastor Hahn took this courageous step and wrote an excellent examination of his own battle with anxiety. His witness as an anxiety sufferer is powerful stuff. Here's hoping more Christians will discuss mental illness with more compassion and candor.

Inspiring

Anxiety is something that God knows we deal with. He addressed in His book, the Bible numerous times & says that His peace is the opposite of anxiety. Does that mean that we still battle against anxiety or experience anxiousness? Not necessarily & that does not mean that His peace isn't powerful enough to combat.

This book is written by a pastor who suffers from anxiety and faces it still. Folks, this book earns great credibility before you turn the first page, because it is written from someone who is in the fight & is someone who depends on God to battle through it.

If you want an honest discussion about anxiety & the inspiration to move forward against it, this is the book for you. The greatest quality of this book is that the author is your partner in this challenge & not your coach. Be encouraged, inspired and lifted up in the battle of anxiety.

An excellent guide to the roller coaster that is the oil market

This is an excellent overview of the oil market cycles. McNally goes through significant history and technical details about the petroleum industry while retaining what I would consider a journalistic style. He also is even handed when addressing various controversial theories such as 'peak oil', or the role of OPEC and the US shale industry in the most recent glut. In addition, his smooth and accessible writing style makes for an enjoyable read. He has studied the topic deeply. I was pleased to read his logical analysis of supply and demand, and how the lags in increasing and decreasing production inside the oil industry lead to the inevitable booms and busts that we have seen. The book was written with care, and the graphs and charts inside support the findings well. I recommend this book highly if you would like to understand what has happened in the oil market, why, and what it means for the market in the years to come.

Splendid and readable insight into a crucial market.

A much-needed account of the history of oil price volatility. Anybody assuming that the oil market is driven by Adam Smith's "Invisible Hand" is in for a rude awakening. Throughout its history, the oil market has been manipulated. The author makes a good case that such manipulation - resulting in relative price stability - is generally (although not always) a public welfare. The rise and fall of the various manipulating/stabilising protagonists over time is clearly delineated,as is the prospect for significantly reduced price stability in the period ahead. I had always assumed that shale oil would be a natural swing supply, but the author debunks that clinically. If I had to pick a complaint it is that the perspective is too much from the US point of view. The various forces in action in the other producer countries, especially Saudi Arabia, is skipped over a little bit. One big question in my mind is why, in a era of very low oil prices, would Saudi Arabia continue to produce at such high volume? The "bust" period is likely to be followed by "boom" and if the Saudis need immediate cash for their public expenditure, they can issue Shariah-compliant instruments, secured on the oil in the ground, on very favourable terms. But I have no hesitation in giving this 5 stars. It contains valuable insight in a very readable form.

Happily ever after in the Big Apple

I thought this story was not bad. I liked the first book better because I thought there was more together time for the couple and I could watch their relationship grow. This story follows the couple after their engagement from the first book. They are still learning about each other and still crazy for one another.

Dislikes:

The ex that the H took to the charity event and lied to the h about from the first book shows up in this storyline a little too much. I could not understand why the H could not have done more to ban her from his clubs or have his peeps keep her away from the h if he wanted to protect her. I thought there was also way too much smex in this book. There could have been more bonding moments or non smexual together times. There were also a lot of arguments and fights. That is fine, but I felt like the heroine should have just walked out once so the H could grovel and get her back instead of her dropping her panties to resolve disagreements.

Likes:

I love the possessive alpha hero. Since there are dual povs, you hear his thoughts quite often and he thinks a lot about the heroine. He is so in love with her that he would do anything for her. At the same time, he is vulnerable because he is still somewhat uncertain about the heroine and is mega jealous when he sees the heroine smile at other men. He makes the story since he is uber faithful and fairly sensitive and did I say he is crazy about the heroine?

It's a sweet read. I am looking forward to the book on the heroine's best friend and her boss. They seem like a really cute couple!

Love does happen in New York

Lets start with that I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into book nr 2 of Finding Love in New York - Always and Forever. I love the first book so I went in with high expectation for book nr 2 and boy I wasn't disappointed.

In Always and Forever we take off where we left in Finding Love in New York. And things does take off. I don't want to give any spoilers.

We see Callum and Gabbys love for each other grow and just like in any real relationship we see the miss understanding and blowing things out of proportions. The relationship created by Mags between Cal and Gabs is amazing and I could relate to it.

Gabby is still a bit insecure with what is happening but starts to accept it. Callum is still a jealous bastard but his sweet and sexy side does come forward.

The love is hot and steamy and will have you fanning yourself after the read. There will be moments when you want to through your e-reader at the wall and moments where you need a tissue and your heart breaks with Cal and Gab.

I give Always and Forever 4.5 stars out of five. If you love Finding love in New York you will enjoy this one.

I can't wait to read Jen and Pauls story in A Love Betrayed.

I'm just wandering will we see a story of Suzanne and Mitch, fingers crossed....
