About the Author
Thomas Hegghammer is a Senior Fellow at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). He has contributed chapters to several edited books and his articles have appeared in journals such as International Affairs, The International Journal of Middle East Studies, The British Journal of Middle East Studies, The Middle East Journal, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, and The Times Literary Supplement.

A real scholarly work on an important topic!

First, let med start by saying that this is a real scholarly work. Almost every page has lots of comprehensive footnotes. What impresses me the most, is all the primary (and secondary) sources Hegghammer has used in this book: Interviews with and biographies on ex-jihadists, prisoners from Guantanamo, families of active jihadists etc. (about 500 in all if I remember correctly). This makes Hegghammers arguments very convincing.

The book divides the time from 1979 into three periods. The first period ends in the mid-1990s and covers the rise of what Hegghammer calls "classical jihadism", that is the type of jihad conducted in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union, in defense of muslim territories. Other examples are Checnya and Bosnia. The second period lasts from the mid-1990s until 9/11 2001, and covers the rise of al-Qaida and global jihadism, a much more controversial doctrine than classical jihadism. The third period covers al-Qaidas operations in Saudi Arabia, after they were ousted from Afghanistan. For each period Hegghammer has a chapter on the political environment, a chapter on the leaders and the organisations (e.g. al-Qaida), and a chapter on the jihadist recruits themselves.

To me, the most interesting parts of the book were the ones that covered the rise of jihadism. This gives rise to some general lessons, and also to some thoughts on how to win the war on terror. Hegghammer argues convincingly that doing something about symbols of muslim suffering is more important than political reform at home, at least in dealing with al-Qaida. Of course, this may not be the case with all islamists, and he makes some interesting comparisons between Egyptian and Saudi Arabian islamists.

For someone more interested in Saudi Arabia itself (than me), the parts covering al-Qaidas operations in Saudi Arabia may be just as interesting, and rest assured that Hegghammer has covered this in detail.

Great authentic work

I am a Saudi myself and a physician so I know the culture Mr Hegghamer is talking about and I also know what a scholarly scientific work is. This is a great book by all means although I have to object to Mr Hegghammer reference about some massacres executed by the Israeli government as "claimed", but I understand what is it like to be an a academic in the US or Europe where condemning Israel could be of serious consequences on your professional future. Withstanding these glitches this book was the best I read on the subject and worth reading not only by westerners but also Saudis or Muslims who wants to read a critical piece by an an honest outsider not biased to the subject.

Jihad in Saudi Arabia

It is hard to remember this book as I have read 40 books in the past 2 years trying to educate myself about Muslims. I do remember that the Dictator Family has financed Taliban and al Quida. Their special business family, Osama Ben Laden is Saudi and has spent a large part of his vast fortune in the fight against infidels. Today I learned the Pope Sainted 400 Priests that were beheaded for not converting to Islam in the 15th Century. I was taken aback. I thought from what I had read this World Wide Battle by the Muslims to make the entire world one big Muslim world was from this Century. This book tells of the Jihad in Saudi Arabia and the rush of young Saudi men into the battle to get martyred.
Many returned after a week, disgusted with how hard it was. Young men in Saudi Arabia do not do physical labor, but loll about all day. They do not go to the store or seek a job. Some are educated in fine schools and then retire on family money. None do labor work, (it is too hot and it is hired by men from outside the country). It is a very strange society of very wealthy people from their giant pool of oil under the desert. This money is shared by the ruler to keep the people happy and to keep his family in power. He has a group of brothers that have taken turns as rulers. It is soon to be passed to a younger generation as the current generation is growing old and there are thousands of young men heirs to the throne and there will have to be a family election to see who will rule. The Saudi oil money has been the largest contributor to the cost of the battle to convert the world and behead those who do not yield.

About the Author
After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point, Richard Fox served in the Army as a Field Artillery and Military Intelligence officer for almost a decade. During two two fifteen-month long tours in Iraq, he earned the Combat Action Badge, the Bronze Star, and received a Presidential Unit Citation.

He lives and works in southern Arizona with his incredible wife and two boys, amazing children bent on anarchy.

Not your great-grandfather's World War I!

I wasn’t expecting a historical fiction novel to be particularly unique, much less relatable, but this book is an interesting reboot of history. While the story stays true to real events, near as I can tell, there’s a gritty intimacy and modern flair here that you rarely find in history-based tales. For example, one of the most powerful scenes is where Richthofen has to wipe the blood off his face after shredding a British fighter from a dozen yards away. Sounds a little flat here, but you don’t read it… you experience the battle. The author gets all your senses fully engaged. I even found myself subconsciously rubbing my own face. This book nails the up close and brutal nature of WWI aerial combat like I’ve never seen before.

Of course, the fighting is only a fraction of the tale. The Baron’s personal life and the bond he shares fighting with friends, family and mentors really brings the history alive, true, but leads to my only complaint. I just couldn’t find the Red Baron sympathetic. He’s too, well, Prussian for my tastes. Which is historically accurate and all, but since this book lures you in and makes you think you’re reading a modern action thriller, you assume he’s the hero and you expect certain tropes. I was mildly disappointed that I couldn’t root for Richthofen as a “good guy.” Even though he lets the mask slip quite often, I still got the feeling, at the end of the day, that he’s just a stuck up aristocrat more interested in his career and reputation than anything else.

Still, whether you like the guy or not, he and all the supporting cast really come alive. All those stuffy, stale names from the history books dust themselves off and transform into scared young men doing their best to not just survive a war, but also win it. Proud and stubborn warriors coming of age who are sometimes brave, occasionally stupid, but always alive.
All in all, an entertaining read with a new angle on the historical fiction genre, so I’ll give it five stars.

The war hero was just a man.

This is the first work of fiction about the Red Baron that's ever portrayed him as a human being. I'm used to reading about the Red Baron as some sort of unfeeling hunter with a heart of ice. The Red Baron in this book suffers, has doubts, struggles with his role in the war and what he has to do as a leader and a soldier.
This novel has a lot of heart, which we don't see often in war novels. There's an unrequited romance angle that is wonderful and I wish had more attention. During the novel, and the actual history, Manfred was shot in the head. You'd think this would make someone stop fighting, but Manfred kept going despite a lot of pain and what we'd call PTSD nowadays.
Mr. Fox shows us why Manfred didn't quit, why his connection to the soldiers in the trenches was so strong and how he found the stregth to keep going. I wish I could give this book to soldiers still struggling even after the wars are over. Look at the Red Baron, famous for over a hundred years after he died and even he had to struggle with physical and mental issues.
If you're a fan of Shaara's war novels or historical fiction, then give this a read. Maybe pass this on to a veteran who might need a hero to lean on.

The Red Baron follows World War I flying ace Manfred von Richtofen’s transformation from a disgraced cavalry officer relegated to staff position to Germany’s pride of the skies, with over 80 documented air victories. While paying due respect to the aerial tactics that made Richtofen the uncontested fly ace of the war, The Red Baron also offers the reader an insightful look into the personal life of Richtofen, touching on some of the smaller details that could have motivated him to strive to achieve such aerial skill and then continue to fight despite the physical and mental tolls inflicted by constant battle. The Red Baron is a great read that puts a face and a heart to a legend.

This book has some bright spots, but it is too often a pseudo-academic tract where the author tries to bring in a bunch of disparate art and musical movements and tie it in with arcane music and scientific theory. Greil Marcus seems to be the clear antecedent (he even brings in Dada, Marcus's focus in the wonderful Lipstick Traces). Lin obsesses over how music fits into the time-space continuum and how Kid A works in time. Interesting fodder for interesting theories, no doubt, but not exactly specific to this record, so he gets sort of all over the place in discussing that as well as the critical reception to Kid A, its origins, etc. I personally would find the latter stuff much more interesting for a book-length treatise, and it's in these standard music-crit discussions that Lin's book is at its best. Some of the more academic stuff is also good but it's much more hit or miss.

Lin as a writer is solid, although he's got a puzzling habit of putting far too many words in quotation marks, which gives the prose a snarky, ironic tone that I find a bit distasteful. While I don't believe this was his intent, any editor worth his salt should have given all the quotation marks the heave-hoe without a second thought (they're in nearly every paragraph around "normal" words that don't "need" to be set "apart" to show that they're part of the "mainstream" music discourse and might break down under "scrutiny").

In summary, not bad if you're a big fan of the record, but too often it seems like a term paper written by a first-year graduate student who's desperate to show off how much theory he's soaked up and how many diverse works he can apply all of it to. You know that guy. He's the one who brings Foucault into a discussion about the Super Bowl -- those of us who want to talk about football kind of just nod and slowly back away.

Great album, terrible book

If you're interested in learning about the development of this album, this book is not for you. The following excerpt from the Introduction of the book sums up the tone and content of the book. If you're interested in what you read, dive in. But it was a complete bore to me and not at all what I was hoping for when I bought a book about this album. I wish I had been able to read the intro before buying the book.

From Lin's Introduction: "Needless to say, I won't be recounting my favorite Kid A moments or uncovering how each track was made. And I certainly won't be flying to Oxford to get the 'real' story behind the album or the band ('Hey Thom, what do you think about Kid A's relationship with time??'). While the album's aesthetics are the foundation upon which the book will proceed, I'll situate Kid A in contexts that extend beyond the sounds themselves. I'm especially interested in roping us - the audience, the fans, the listeners - into the discussion, to reinvigorate music listening as a site of socio-political importance, to see if we can learn more about ourselves through our shifting tastes, through the mythologies we perpetuate about the album, and particularly through our perceptions of it."

Soulful, challenging, thoughtful

I was skeptical when I read the Amazon synopsis above, but it made this book, #76 in the 33 1/3 series, all the more surprising. The description doesn't do justice to the book's actual content (and I'm guessing it's scaring away potential readers), but the author, Marvin Lin, has managed to convince me that Kid A's significance rivals even that of OK Computer, an album I had previously thought was untouchable. What's amazing about this book is that it balances the personal and the political, the accessible and inaccessible, the 'conceptual' and the 'perceptual' (using his words). It's not a journalistic retread -- read Wikipedia and biographies for that sterile stuff -- but a thoughtful, meaningful discussion/dissection on Kid A's role in both society and in our listening experiences.

The book's boldness challenges in the most joyful way. From what he calls 'transcendence' and the idea of time to personal taste and 'commodification', Lin not only discusses the importance of our listening habits, but he considers the act of music listening implicitly political. But I should be clear that these concepts are NOT the focal points of the book. With the exception of the Kid Agency chapter (which is more about media and mp3s than Kid A specifically), they all relate in meaningful, sometimes dramatic ways to Kid A. Through these concepts, he talks about the identity crisis in the studio, the polarized critical chatter, the significance of the artwork (I learned a lot about the band here -- had no idea global warming had anything to do with Kid A), the way we 'perceive' the album and its music, and the album's marketing and promotion, all while debunking the myths that Radiohead were trying to scare off their fans or even that the album was 'groundbreaking' at all.

As a professor, I enjoyed the more 'academic' chapters (contrary to John Wraith's review, I think Lin does a successful job at not going TOO far down the rabbit hole with theory -- and this is nothing like the series' OK CPU book), but I can see how they might be harder for younger folks to fully understand. There are also times when the album takes a backseat to some of the more explanatory moments in the book (notably, the chapter about "musicking"). But overall, Lin grounds these concepts in the everyday, making them resonate beyond academia. One of the most significant conclusions, I think, is Lin's belief that music listening isn't really about escaping the world, but engaging with it on a perceptual level -- that whether or not you're aware of it, the world can be changed through music. It's a hard pill to swallow at first, but it's a convincing one.

This book ranks right up there with the Sonic Youth, Celine Dion, and Throbbing Gristle books in the 33 1/3 series.
