A very comprehensive book...

This book gives a very good insight as to the different aspects of sound engineering in a semi technical albeit basic approach. The various theories like microphones, stereo, mixing, PA, basic acoustics and the like are covered here. It is a more practical approach to engineering, where many of the details wouldn't help in a real recording session. Geeks would be better looking for some other title as the details aren't very technical in a numbers and facts sort of way, it is more of a descriptive style.

This would be a great primer for sound engineering students. Overall I think I got the idea as to what are the specifics that are required to be known in order to be a sound engineer.

Very good, very clear basic text

I'm a technically trained person, but in another discipline entirely. I knew almost nothing about sound engineering when I started reading this book, but I had gotten involved with a amateur, community, internet radio station (Occupy Boston Radio). This book gave very clear explanations of the basics and beyond. It was incredibly helpful. It is rare to find a technical book that doesn't assume people fall into one of two classes: experts, or complete idiots. This book assumes you are a smart person, who just doesn't happen to know this stuff, yet. Perfect!

Incredible!! A rare textbook that does not depend on a competent teacher

I picked up this book just as a supplement before my freshman year in high school, and it ended up leading my entire geometry honors education, way ahead of my teacher and my school-assigned textbook. In the last 7 years, I have not had a textbook that teaches math in such a logical, clear, and light-hearted way, while maintaining the discipline and rigor of a formal mathematics training.

I am now a senior in college, and have taken several rigorous mathematics courses in Analysis, Multivariate Calculus, and Linear Algebra, and the experience of self-studying from this textbook still stays with me. Before I learned from this book, I thought I was completely unskilled and incompetent at math, and quite frankly, math scared me. I realized later that student achievement in math is highly dependent on both a great textbook and great instruction, and not some mystical "math gene". I want to thank Harold R. Jacobs for writing math the way it should be done; if math were taught like this in all our public schools, it would truly revolutionize U.S. education in math and science. It puts an important emphasis at understanding the basics of proofs and geometry, to the point where you can relate it to logical phenomenons in your everyday life... to a point where it becomes second nature and just not another theory to memorize. This is a very Eastern method of math education, prevalent in Chinese and Russian classrooms, which may be what U.S. education reform needs. It is an incredibly powerful way to educate math. When the fundamentals are mastered at a deep level, the book challenges you to a wide variety of problems, which instead of being daunting (which is the norm for a math course), they are incredibly satisfying to solve. This book actually teaches thinking and logic, not just material.

AS A COMPARISON TEXTBOOK: Geometry for Enjoyment and Challenge by Richard Rhoad, George Milauskas and Robert Whipple was the was assigned for my geometry honors class, and it is incomparable to Harold's book. Geometry for Enjoyment used proofs that were incredibly circuitous that I often wondered if the authors purposely lengthened the lines of their proofs just to add more pages to their book. My dad (a former math professor) and I caught a couple logical errors or typos in Geometry for Enjoyment that should not have been made by the authors. 3 weeks into my Geometry Honors class I stopped even looking at their solutions to geometry proofs, because once they reached proofs of moderate or advanced level, 90% of the time the steps were roundabout and overdone, to the point of illogical. Instead, I would reference Jacobs's textbook for proofs to similar problems.

The same proof in Jacobs's textbook took half the amount of steps, and used the most logical and powerful path, which really are quite beautiful in comparison to the textbook the high school assigned to me. Occams razor exists as profound philosophy in science & math for a reason, and Jacobs embodies that!

Another great thing about Harold's textbook is that it has very light-hearted and entertaining application problems. One segment that I love is in the beginning, there is an illustration of the Mad Hatter and his friends having tea with Alice, commenting on how it's an incredible logical fallacy "to say what you mean" with "to mean with you say." I've forgotten the entire quote, but it was very entertaining. Most high school math textbooks have application problems about climbing ladders and filling concrete in some giant cylindrical container, or some other oversimplified version of an industrial building project. What high school-er finds that fun?? I would much rather solve problems about Euclid in comic-form or of Alice venturing in wonderland. Basic geometry is incredibly abstract, so it only makes sense to apply it in a profoundly simple and fantastic setting.

If I ever teach geometry in the future, this is my textbook of choice! The best for self-study and classroom education!

Taught Classes With it Several Times, Fabulous for Home-Schoolers

As the other reviews show...this book is not only lucid and brilliant, but quite accessible. I've taught classes with it starting in Jr. High with gifted youngsters and with homeschoolers starting in the 6th grade.
I regularly recommend this book to homeschool moms because it is not intimidating, and they invariably enjoy it.
Also, this is PURE geometry, untainted by algebra. Probably the first and only time most students have to learn logic and the structure of argument.
A no brainer. This is the best geometry book I've ever seen, hands down.

Between 1918 and 1919, the Spanish Flu killed up to 100 million people. The flu first rose near Boston, and as it raged through the city, people were told to nurse their sick at home because the hospitals were overwhelmed. Toronto watched as the flu ravaged Boston, then Montreal. The virus was on its way.

However, thirteen-year-old Meredith is preoccupied with her own problems. Though she dreams of becoming a teacher, the girl is working as a servant for Doctor Waterton and his motherless family. She assists the cook and butler, and minds Harry, the youngest son, who is as mischievous a lad as any who ever stole from the sugar bowl. Imperious Maggie is a few years older than Meredith, and is a demanding mistress. Fortunately, the new maid finds a friend in Maggie's fifteen-year-old brother, Jack.

Then the flu strikes Toronto. Dr. Waterton goes to the hospital to tend the first patients, but never comes home. He sends word that he cannot be spared - not even when young Harry takes ill. Then the cook collapses, followed by the butler. The Waterton house is virtually cut off from the world. Meredith turns inexperienced hands to nursing and seeks Jack and Maggie's help in saving the sick.

Pat Bourke's debut YA historical novel, "Yesterday's Dead," plunges us into the desperate straits of families caught up in the epidemic. Ms. Bourke also explores the everyday struggles of working girls like Meredith. The epidemic tests Meredith's resolve, and also her ability to forge bonds with her reluctant helpers. Younger teenage girls should particularly enjoy Meredith's story and her ultimate triumph over adversity that most of us can only imagine.

Great historical discussion

Thirteen-year old Meredith was used to working hard in her own family but wasn't ready to take on the household of Dr. Waterton where she had to put up with cranky help and unkind children. The only pleasant person was the cook, Mrs. Butters. I absolutely loved Mrs. Butters...she would be the perfect person to have around if you were missing your mother as Meredith was. Meredith had been yanked out of her household and had to work since her father had died in the war, and her mother needed extra income.

Dr. Waterton was a kind person even with all the stress he was under with his children to raise since wife had died and the Spanish Flu to contend with.

Since Meredith had to make a good impression on the Watertons, she did her utmost to make everything work out as best as she could, especially when everyone began to fall ill from the Spanish flu. Meredith is the main character, and you will love her, her strength, her level-headedness, and her sweetness.

Even though I normally do not read YA books, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I always enjoy books set in the early 1900's and am always amazed how people cooked in stoves that were powered by coal. I also enjoy the setup of the households of the wealthy in terms of how many servants they had and how they were treated and how the servants treated each other.

This is a book for those who love historical fiction and have a love of the life Americans, Canadians, and Europeans lived before all our conveniences and medicines. It actually is frightening in terms of illnesses with no antibiotics to cure anyone. Wonder if antibiotics would have had any effect in this strain of the flu?

Enjoy the book....I certainly did and benefited from the history lesson. I definitely enjoyed the interaction among the characters. This would make a great discussion in a classroom in terms of how today's youth would feel about the way the characters reacted to each other and how illnesses are treated differently today. In fact, there would be many topics for interesting group discussions. 5/5

Historical fiction on par with American Girl or Dear America

"...I finished this book in one night, and again, I definitely liked it. The only other book I really remember reading that mentions the Spanish Influenza was Twilight, when Edward explains to Bella about the end of his human life. Bourke gives us a lot more to go on, as far as better understanding the extent of what this illness meant for the people in the midst of the outbreak. I've had the flu before, but this sounds a bit more awful, I think. I think I would have really enjoyed this book if I'd read it when I was younger, as well; I've always liked historical fiction, and with Meredith's story, Bourke covers a topic that isn't touched on as much for the main plot in a novel, so that's always welcome, I think."

Excellent information

PMC is a superb little book, filled with premium ideas. For those with some knowledge of NLP, Ericksonian techniques, and other forms of covert hypnotic induction this book will fill in many gaps.

However, its primary topic is not for the faint of heart.

It is a pity that a book as good as PMC did not receive the quality of editing that it deserves. It is replete with typos and misspelled words. Also, its font/type is rather large with overly generous spacing - which is common among books of this kind (many of Richard Bandler's books suffer from the same issues). If the book was better crafted in respect to its layout, font size, and was edited for grammar/spelling/et cetera I would give it five stars.

Regardless, the knowledge contained in PMC is of a high quality. Purchase it if you get the chance. It will go very well in concert with The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene, and other books of that nature.

Create your own cult

This books title may be somewhat deceiving. The text is typed very large as if to simply fill the pages. It simply did not fit all together. The author gives many tips on creating a cult of followers and becoming a guru. The basic part after qualifying candidates is to use Ericksonian based hypnosis on them. If you aren't a hypnotist I would steer clear of this title. It was an interesting read but not practical to use to influence most people.

Fascinating and frightening

I bought this book as a recent graduate from a hypnosis course. I had been told that no one had ever been harmed by hypnosis, and that you can't use hypnosis to gain control over someone. I doubted this dogma, and set out to read about the "dark side" of hypnosis and NLP, so that I can have a more complete knowledge of the possibilities and pitfalls in the field.

I was surprised to find explicit instructions for creating a cult of sex slaves. It is written as ethically as one could write with this subject in mind, with explicit instructions to keep them happy and healthy, stay within the law, avoid power trips, accept feedback from an "insubordinate" (compared with a court jester), etc. Nonetheless, I am glad that I did not meet the author in a younger and less secure stage of my life. I think that real harm could be done with some of the processes in this book. One would need good ethics and self-control, as well as a strong background in hypnosis and NLP, to use these techniques successfully. And, a person with good ethics, wouldn't. I strongly suspect that one could create multiple personality disorder in their subject, as only one example of how things could backfire badly.

That said, the first two hypnotic scripts, regarding self-esteem and learning to create joy and comfort from within, are well-written, totally ethical, and I would not hesitate to use them. After that, hypnotic suggestions that the subject will enjoy making the hypnotist happy, enjoy bondage, etc., do not fit within my ethical system or the ethical system of any other professional hypnotist.

If you want to create a cult, keep yourself out of trouble and don't even think about reading this book. There are too many pitfalls that you won't be prepared for, both for yourself and others. If you want a perspective on mind control, it is an interesting read.
