Pointless Publication

Having pre-ordered this book, I was very disappointed when I actually received it. It is far too short to justify the effort and material required for constructing a cover around the content. The information contained in the book should have been laid out in a set of web pages in order to be useful. This would have made sense considering that the book intends to provide information about public online data sources.

For each public data source listed in the book, the description is a title, a short paragraph describing the data source, and a URL or curl request. In some cases a json or xml response from the service is shown. This level of detail is disappointing and uninteresting (IMHO).

In the preface the author references a website listing public sources of information, [...]. The API directory on this website contains far more sources of data than this book (which lists about 57 or so). My advice would to someone looking for public data sources would be to start at that website and not to waste money on this book.

very disappointing

This book is extremely disappointing and has precious little information about the data sources listed. It's really just a list of links spun out in a criminally overpriced book. Do not buy the printed version. At $30, it is basically $1 per page. Yes, that's right. The book only has 32 pages!!! Perhaps the electronic version is worth the price, but even that is debatable.

and there is not enough value for the price that it has been sold for ... there is nothing special in this book that anyone who are interested in apis dont already know I gave it one star only for the cover design

Raw Power is Rich in Information

Raw Power! is concise, well-written, and above all a helpful book on the use of living foods, natural supplements, and exercise for those in pursuit of improved strength, musculature, and health through a raw-foods lifestyle. The clear, succinct explanations of the effects of living foods in the body, the necessity for increased plant-based protein, as well as the process of becoming more muscular and healthy allow easy implementation of Thor's program. I found this piece not only informative, but also enlightening in that I could add the ideas to my existing vegan, mostly raw diet with little effort.

I have read other works on raw food nutrition, exercise, and natural supplementation, but none that presented the information in such facile fashion! I recommend this book to anyone interested in obtaining optimal health and fitness through raw foods.

THE PARK HOTEL built in 1934 was rumoured to have been Chairman Mao's favourite. It is a landmark in Shanghai and representative of pre-Communist China. For almost fifty years, the Art Deco hotel was the “tallest building in the Far East” —and for many years, the tallest outside of North America. This skyscraper, an architectural expression of modernity and capitalism, was commissioned by bourgeois Chinese businessmen. They hired the Austro-Hungarian architect, Laszlo Hudec (1893–1958), to bridge Western ideas of modernity and the needs of China. Today, in China and abroad, Hudec has become a “star architect” of the pre-Communist period.

About the Author
LENORE HIETKAMP wrote the first version of this study on Laszlo Hudec and the Park Hotel in 1998. The architect's work then began to catch the eye of scholars and architectural enthusiasts around the world. Lenore has given over twenty lectures on Laszlo Hudec, from Victoria, Canada, to Shanghai, China, on subjects ranging from the hotel as pop art to the architect's European roots. She has contributed to a book on Shanghai’s visual culture and written an encyclopedia article on the hotel. Her exhibit on Hudec still hangs on the walls of the Park Hotel. The exhibit opened in 2001 to much fanfare and a large audience that included city officials and current residents of Hudec's buildings. After seven years in a PhD program at the University of Washington, Lenore now works as an editor and specializes in architectural history.

Nice Souvenir

We purchased this book for our toddler after visiting Toronto on vacation. The books isn't particularly well written or interesting for a toddler, but that doesn't mean older children may not enjoy it. The best part of the book are the illustrations which are cute, with vibrant colors. The book also doesn't reference many of the main areas or landmarks that we happened to visit, except for the CN Tower. Unlike other books, our toddler hasn't shown must interest in it, so it mainly serves as a souvenir.

I liked the book because it is good for young people to learn about Canada. It has good things in it and teaches you how to spell them and learn about Canada. Perfect for Regular and Honors Chemistry

This book has enough width and depth for first-year high-school chemistry. Most of the students I tutor use it for honors chemistry. Even if you are in second-year chemistry (AP or IB), you will still find this book very helpful.

I bought this book (listed as used, like new) from Amazon. A brand-new book was shipped from California to Virginia in just 3 days! It is the best purchasing experience in my life.

Great series. Look for their Science Notebook and Lab Manual too.

I have the 2002 version of the textbook.

The table of contents is very informative. It points out the pages that touch on other courses (earth science, biology, history, astronomy, physics), and has separate pages listing the different types of labs (chem labs, mini labs, problem-solving labs, and discovery labs). I bought their lab manual which has different experiments than the textbook so we wouldn't have to write everything out in a lab journal, but you wouldn't necessarily have to have the lab manual to complete labs. There are at least 78 labs in this book (not including the 26 problem-solving labs which are activities like making graphs and analyzing data). While some labs included in the text require lab supplies you might find in a high school lab, some can be done using materials from your local hardware store.

The photos and graphics are in color and the language is very accessible, which makes the text enjoyable to read. Each section has a list of vocabulary in the left column and the words are clearly defined in the text. The chapters end with a study guide where each section is broken down into its' main ideas, followed by assessment questions and a page of standardized test practice. I appreciate that the chapters refer to things learned in earlier sections or chapters and reference which chapter or section the information came from so you can review it if necessary. Answers to practice problems scattered throughout the chapter are in the back of the book, but answers to the end of chapter assessments are in the teacher's edition of the textbook.

There's also a teacher's edition of the lab manual which has the answers to the labs, and a teacher's edition science notebook which contains the answers to the student's science notebook.

Overall, a very well done series.

One of the best Chemistry book for high school

This is one of the best Chemistry text book for high school. I use this book for tutoring high scholl students. It has lots good examples and answers, and it explains the concept really well. I would recomment this book to anyone who takes Chemistry or AP Chemistry in high school.

Another rousing episode, perhaps the last, in McCaffrey's saga, begun in Freedom's Landing (1995) and continued in Freedom's Choice , about the colonists on the planet Botany. Botany is now under attack by the Eosi, who are unable to penetrate the planet-surrounding Bubble constructed by the advanced race that had given permission for the colony to remain on the planet. Kris Bjornson, who was with the first group dumped on the planet by the Eosi-dominated Cattani forces, is one of the settlement's leaders, as is her lover, the insurgent Cattani, Zainal. Having built a new home for themselves, the settlers decide it is time to contact dissidents on the various Eosi-controlled worlds and wage a war of liberation. Since the Botany settlers possess stolen technology, including Cattani warships, they are able to rescue other victims of the Eosi and bring them to Botany. Kris and Zainal lead a small band, all disguised as Cattani, to the Cattani home world on the first sortie to enlist Cattani rebels in the battle. The action is fast paced and riveting, and the characters, human and of other species, are well limned and exhibit great individuality. McCaffrey continues to amaze with her ability to create disparate, well-realized worlds and to portray believable humans, convincing aliens of varied sorts, and credible interactions between them all. Third in McCaffrey's series (Freedom's Landing, 1995; Freedom's Choice, 1997) about planet Botany and its diverse population of humans and aliens, including ex-Earth Girl Kris Bjornsen and her aristocratic, renegade Cattani lover, Zainal. The Earth, you see, has been conquered by the catlike Cattani, but the Cattani are themselves dominated by the parasitic alien Eosi. Intended as a do-or-die prison colony, the Botanists have freed themselves from Cattani domination, aided in part by the planet's alien landlords, the Farmers, powerful but benevolent beings who've screened the planet from Cattani spacecraft. Now, Kris, Zainal and the others have ambitions to liberate Earth from the Cattani and the Cattani from the Eosi. A Series of Successes

In this third volume of the Freedom trilogy, Anne McCaffrey closes all the loose ends she'd left open in the previous two volumes, effectively ending the series. As a whole, the series was interesting, and throughout the three books, I felt for the characters, and wanted to know what they'd do next. It was a step-by-step detailed description of how a small group of exiles built a home on a planet that was initially hostile to them. In the context of being a series ending, the book is satisfying. The colonists finally realize success after so long and hard an endeavor. But when viewed by itself, this book contained only the successes, and none of the real hardships.

The entire book passes by with very little challenge to the colonists of Botany. It was an interesting logistical inventory for setting up a successful colony, but there's no real conflict. Just about everything they attempt works out, often better than they'd expected. About halfway through the book, I was sure something would finally go wrong, but it never did. Some of the successes were ridiculously easy. Some were at the very least, improbable. The humans on Botany were able to disguise themselves as Catteni with a little makeup and prosthetic cheekbones. This disguise was somehow able to fool real Catteni even after prolonged interaction. I found this a little bit unlikely.

As an ending to the series, it was adequate. But to make it a good installment in a trilogy, the author really should have included more conflict and story. The last book could have ended "And they lived happily ever after" and no real plot points would have been lost. Still, the writing style is enjoyable, and I already liked the characters enough to see what happened next. The same favorites are back in this book, and the story such as it is moves along with good pacing. On that merit alone, the book earns three stars.

Of the three books in this series, this was undoubtably the worst. I greatly enjoyed the first two, and certainly do not think that my reading of the third book was a waste of time . . . but I think perhaps Ms. McCaffrey was a bit hasty in ending this storyline. She didn't have her usual depth in resolving the plots. The characters were also not as fully developed as I've come to expect from this marvelous author.

Was this the synopsis before the actual book?

As a devoted reader of Anne McCaffrey I couldn't wait to find out what happened with the Botany people. I was very disappointed to find out that the book tells the story in such a general fashion, and in such broad notions, that no depth is created. I always loved Anne McCaffrey's books for their characters' depth. Since she has given a lot of information and details in the Pern series, I expected that to reflect in other works. It was not. The character of Zainal is shallow. There is no info on the way he thinks, feel, or even why he is doing what he is doing. And if you do not like to know that, but just like the action of the book - well, not much there either. The story is what I would tell a friend if asked what the book is about. It is general, without the details that are expected. It gives the basics of actions taken, without giving information about the actions themselves. If you read other works of science fiction or fantasy, such as another favorite of mine Rober Jordan, you immediately see a difference. In the Wheel of Time series, for example, the characters come to life and the story is complete without gaps. I really regret to write this about this book, as I truly like the writing of Anne McCaffrey, and plan to continue reading her books.
