A truly incredible book for those players "stuck" at the 6- or 7-kyu level. This is NOT a book for beginners. It makes no attempt to explain the rules of the game, and assumes a familiarity with Go that is already impressive. Simply written (and well translated), this book provides a number of rules in each chapter that are easy to understand, and then illustrates them with explanations and examples, complete with carefully conceived diagrams.
"Fundamentals should be interpreted, not as something narrow like joseki, but in a broad sense, as one's whole approach to the game...People often lament, 'I followed the book but I still lost'. Their problem is that they have become slaves to form, without understanding the spirit behind the form."

All you need to pass the shelf

A 25 year old medical student comes into your clinic complaining of anxiety for the past week. He tells you he has an upcoming shelf exam in psychiatry and "I haven't studied." Further history reveals that his clinical rotation did not expose him to all aspects of psychiatry, and there are major gaps in his knowledge base. His medical history is unremarkable other than a healing bruise on his right temple from wrestling a PCP-intoxicated schizophrenic to the ground. He reports some difficulty falling asleep but notes that "reading case files helps." When asked how his rotation has gone so far, the student says "fine, but I think one of the attendings has it out for me." When asked if he had any reason to believe the attending was conspiring against him, the student responds "dude, it's an expression. I meant he doesn't like me." Student denies anhedonia, depressed mood, or audio or visual hallucinations. Utox is negative.

What treatment approach will be most effective in this patient?

A. psychodynamic psychotherapy to find the source of his anxiety
B. cognitive-behavioral therapy to overcome his fear of PCP-intoxicated schizophrenics
C. risperidone for his persecutory delusion
D. full leather restraints to assist study discipline

Great review book

Great review book! Very helpful on psychiatry clerkship preparing for the shelf exam. Case scenarios are similar to shelf exam style. Explanations to questions are thorough and well written. The broad range of topics is very complete, from adult to pediatric psychiatry, to pharm management and legal and ethical issues and the two complete practice exams are very useful.

Lange Q&A Psychiatry, 10th EditionSo far I have completed the first 2 Chap and believe that this is a great resource. The questions are interesting, well written, and incorporate concepts from other fields of medicine to make the clinical scenarios realistic. I recommend Lange Q&A for learning about Psychiatry,and preparing for the NBME shelf exam. Other students that took the shelf before me recommended this book in addition to World and rather than "other" popular Psych question books.

Addendum:
After completing the NBME Psych Shelf exam I believe this book was instrumental in doing well (contrary to popular belief Psych Shelf is not easy).

Excellent Introduction to Electrical Machines

As an undergraduate, I used Fitzgerald/Kingsley as my machines text. This text is vastly superior to that book and Chapman's Electric Machinery book. The book covers many topics both from the internal operation of the machine and when the machine is connected to external equipment.

The book is clearly written for the undergraduate engineer and he places plenty of examples in the text.

I believe the practicing engineer will also find this book useful as well as there are many practice problems that relate to re-world situations.

Gross tackles this subject with ease and grace rarely seen in today's textbooks.

This is an excellent text. Gross takes the often butchered subject of EM machines and shows how it should be taught. In industry, you don't just consider the electric motor and generator alone. There are controls and governors and prime movers and then there's the consideration of the load. Also, inrush currents are very important in applications. Unless you actually design electric machines for a living, most texts that neglect the real-world aspect of EM machines are doing the student a very great disservice. It's nice to have a book that really gives an accurate idea about how motors and generators are used in the real world. Most texts neglect this, including the Fitzgerald staple, and if they don't it's at the end of the text and very vague.

So, Gross takes those concepts and integrates them into the fundamentals of the motor and generator. Someone who reads this text will be very well educated on how motors and generators are really used in the real world, not to mention transformers. What's really impressive about this book is that Gross uses schematics that mimic real-life industry schematics, like his 3-line diagram for transformers. He even includes the zig-zag wired transformer! I have never seen that in a book like this. I highly recommend this book.

P.S. I also highly recommend his power systems book.

This book has lots of info but it will require that the instructor explains and goes over things for better understanding especially for students/ppl that never dealt with electric motors.

After reading this book to my six year old I asked him how many stars I should give it and he said 100. (And he knows Amazon's rating only goes up to five.) For me I'd give it a three. The book takes about ten minutes to read aloud, half the limericks are good and the pictures are well done. My son loves cats but we can not have one due to allergies so books and movies such as The Adventures of Milo and Otis are about it for us.

Lovely wee book with short and funny limericks about cats. Beautiful illustrations to go with each. A nice introduction to poetry for children. My only criticism would be it is maybe a little too short, I wanted more! Look forward to future titles from the author.
