About the Author

Chris Olsen , CCSI, CCNP, along with numerous other Cisco voice and data center specializations (in addition to Microsoft, VMware, and Novell certifications), has been an independent IT and telephony trainer, consultant, author, and technical editor for more than 22 years. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Bradley University in the 1980s. Chris has been a technical trainer for more than 22 years and has taught more than 60 different courses in Cisco, Microsoft, VMware, and Novell. For the past nine years, he has specialized in Cisco and Microsoft Unified Communications, along with Vmware virtualization and Cisco data center technologies. He has done a wide array of IT and telephony consulting for many different companies. Chris and his wife, Antonia, live in Chicago and Mapleton, Illinois.

Very poorly written

I am a big fan of Cisco Press books as they typically are of high quality. I am a CCNP certified engineer that has been dealing with this technology for 15+ years and bought this book purely as a quick reference towards the new exams as most of the other new exams don't have any books released yet. This book however is very poor. This book relates to a CCNP level exam and is not nearly technical enough to even get an understanding of the topics. It is very poorly organized. The sections are very broken up and short. The grammar and spelling are poor. It is a very difficult book to read, not because of the topics, but because of the way they approach them and the lack of editing. It actually looks more like an outline that a writer might build before filling in content. A lot of the lists aren't cascaded in a logical way and make absolutely no sense. I will stop here as I dont want to write a book on how poor this book is but it is definitely a black eye to the Cisco Press name.

Good mainstream-lust anthology. Worth owning.

STANDOUT STORIES:

1.) "Her Forest, Her Rules" - Laila Blake: Fun, fantasy elf sex play work. Well-written.

2.) "In Threes" - Elizabeth Coldwell: Mood-effective threesome piece.

3.) "Punishing Desmedona" - Catherine Paulssen: Two actors engage in theatrical spank sex. Well-written.

4.) "Monsoon Season" - Valerie Alexander: Romantic intense couple push their carnal boundaries. Good read.

Violet Blue's finger is on the pulse of women's desires with this collection!

For an early Christmas present, my hubby responded to Ms. Blue's request for reviewers of her latest Erotica collection. It was a delightful present! Violet Blue is among my favorite erotica anthology editors. She brings her vision about sexuality into each story. The authors of Best Women's 2014 Erotica have all voiced some core belief that Violet Blue holds about women's desires. Much of what she divines from these stories is based on countless women who also voice their desires. Her introduction addresses the idea of what women want both directly and indirectly. Ms. Blue states that women shouldn't be underestimated when they voice their wants. She is right. They want a myriad of things, complexities held by no single person that can encompass the entirety of womanhood. That through exploration in the imagination, a woman can not (and should not) be judged by her baser wants. It is through these wants that she becomes a complete, erotic being (something often denied to her by societal norms and pressures).
Each of these stories is about strong, intelligent women discovering some new aspect of their sexual desires. From the beginning where a woman learns to love sex when she thought she hated it to the end where a woman pursues the man she sees every day and wants from afar, each story is a lesson in sexual empowerment which so strongly mirrors Violet Blue's own life and philosophy. These aren't princess stories. No powerful Dom comes along and shows the innocent, clueless girl how to behave. But there are power exchanges and consensual domination by both men and women and no one is without a voice, such as in the story Marylou by Lucy DeBussy where the young shipmate finds her disguise blown and the crew emboldened by the heat of the island where they have taken a brief respite. While it may seem like she is in danger at first, she takes control of the situation and her own pleasure, using the crew.
Each story is better than the next and I was disappointed when the anthology ended. Looking back on the contents now, I see that it was a complete 200 pages but it didn't feel like it and I sped through the stories. When I first examined the contents, I was excited to see my favorite authors, Sommer Marsden and Alison Tyler included as well as Laura Antoniou who I have not read but have waiting in my collection. Her story, Blame Spartacus was incredibly powerful and amusing. What woman doesn't want gladiators fighting for her attentions? The other authors didn't disappoint. I even went to Craigslist after reading Sommer Marsden's Gentleman's Valet just to see if I could convince my husband to get this devious piece of furniture re-imagined as a sex chair! There wasn't one available on Craigslist though. Someone must have read that story before I did! Authors who were new to me emerged from the collection too. I loved the story by Jade A. Waters, Toys, where Jennifer has a fascination with sex toys but can't find a man who isn't intimidated by her vast collection. This story came to mind when I was drooling over the new iroha toys by Tenga and I had the wild thought that I wanted ALL of them.
I don't doubt Violet Blue when she wrote in the introduction that she reads quite a few stories to cull out these gems. I truly could not decide which of the stories I liked the best. They all spoke to me in some way which means that Violet Blue has accomplished her goal in bringing to women the makings of their deepest desires. There was a never a main character who left me disassociated with her needs. There was never a storyline that made me cringe or want to hide in shame. It speaks to the incredible power of Violet Blue that she's able to tap into the depth of story to bring women power.

It is the Best in Women's Erotica

I've been reading Best Women's Erotica since the first edition that came out in 2000 and each year it gets better and better. About the Author
J. Steven Ott is a professor and dean emeritus at the University of Utah. He has written numerous books on organization theory, organizational behavior, nonprofit organizations, and organizational culture. His recent journal articles have appeared in the International Journal of Organization Theory and Behavior, Public Organization Review, Public Performance & Management Review, Public Administration Review, and Public Integrity. He teaches organizational behavior, organizational leadership and change, the nonprofit sector in society, nonprofit organization management, and organization theory. Ott worked as a management consultant to organizations in the nonprofit and public sectors for 26 years before joining the faculties at the universities of Maine and Utah. His Ph.D. is from the University of Colorado, his M.S. from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his B.A. form Pennsylvania State University.

Sandra J. Parkes is the Associate Dean of Continuing Education at the University of Utah, where she also teaches in the Public Administration Program. Her primary teaching and research interests are in the areas of organizational behavior and development, organizational leadership and change, motivation, human resource management, transfer of training, arts administration, and the practice of management. Her most recent publication was a chapter in the HANDBOOK OF PUBLIC MANAGEMENT PRACTICE AND REFORM. She has been a management consultant and trainer in business, nonprofit organizations, and government and works extensively with the municipal clerk and fire service professions. Her doctorate is from Arizona State University, and her Master's degree from the University of Wyoming.

Richard B. Simpson is the Associate Provost, Division of Continuing Education, Colorado State University. He has been an adjunct professor of public administration and the Executive MBA program at the David Eccles School of Business at the University Utah. He is now affiliated academically with the Industrial/Organizational Psychology Department at Colorado State University He teaches courses in organizational behavior, motivation and leadership, administrative practice, and organizational and industrial psychology, in the executive MBA and MPA programs. For many years, Simpson has been an active management consultant and trainer in industry, government, higher education, and health care organizations. His Ph.D. is in Industrial Organizational Psychology, M.S. in Economics, and B.S. in Biology.

Classic Readings in Organizational Behavior

Interesting collection of articles providing historical perspective on organizational behavior theories, however some articles seem to be rather severely edited. For example, comparing the version of Mary Parker Follett's "The Giving of Orders" found in Shafritz & Hyde's Classics of Public Administration with the version in this book, one can see where quite a bit of material was cut in this version - it might be called the Readers' Digest version of this article. I actually wound up using the version of the Follett article that is in the Shafritz and Hyde book instead of the version in this book for a citation in a paper I am writing for my org. behavior class, even though I purchased this expensive book as a text for the org. behavior class. Experience with the Follett article makes me wonder how much is missing from the other articles in Classic Readings in Organizational Behavior.

Please WELCOME back Professor Derek Rowntree's LEARN HOW TO STUDY, now in its 5th edition. First published 45 years ago, it has since helped more than a MILLION readers around the world in a variety of languages.

Back in 1970 it was the ORIGINAL — the first book about studying to offer readers the friendly, tutorial style (incorporating 'interactive' activities with feedback) that has since become such a feature of Open University teaching materials and has been adopted by numerous other authors of books for students.

Since 1988, however, Professor Rowntree was too busy pioneering elearning courses at the Open University to have time to update his book. Consequently it soon seemed to him to be not relevant enough to the very courses he was developing, so he let it go out of print for the last ten years. Now, in his retirement, and many years richer in experience of student learning, he has at last found time to rewrite the book into the 21st century of learning.

LEARN HOW TO STUDY is not a collection of handy hints and quick fixes. Of course, it includes chapters on the critical reading of texts (in print and on screen), making notes, learning from seminars, lectures and new media, writing essays, tackling exams successfully, and so on — but presented in a way that encourages students to become reflective and exploratory about their approaches to learning and choose for themselves which ways of studying best meet their purposes. Professor Rowntree suggests to students that the three things they need to do to succeed are as follows:
•to understand what they want out of learning and what other people (especially tutors) expect of them.
•to develop approaches that will enable them to acquire the kind of learning that will satisfy their tutors while also getting what they themselves want from the process.
•to convincingly demonstrate that learning in both formal and informal assessment situations.
And this ‘virtual tutorial’ aims to help readers succeed in these goals, despite the 'hidden curriculum' and the often conflicting pressures within their learning situation.

SIMPLY PROFOUND
I cannot believe there is no review for this which is why I am doing it, from a personal see me feel me standpoint, coz I'm old like that. Maybe because it's an english book of the modest open university don't blow your horn approach which has this book so quiet whilst other mega hype bollux books sell the 'secrets' of success for 50 bucks +.
OK, now my story of how I was introduced to this book over 3 decades ago whilst on the Rapid Track at college in London, we were mostly international students paying big fees so wanted to complete courses in half time. We had special Study Techniques which were incredible, the only experience I've had so profound in changing behaviour was The Alexandra Technique in adjusting how we sit, walk, talk etc.
Our Study Techniques had us adjust our patterns of reading, writing, skimming, discussion by simply minor modifications whose affects were incredible. Remember we were international students, from all parts of former British empire yet we were all equally affected. We passed in half the time of regular students, I went onto study in the US where the simple profound study approach of Derek Rowntree became habitual.
I have not mentioned any of the 'techniques' here as much cognitive research has been done since with many books and videos on sale those days. But none put it in such a simple and profound way with NO hype, like this beautiful simple book does.
It's the simplicity of these techniques which is why I rate this book so highly, so small, so light with NO hype and has disappears off my shelf numerous times because it's so simply profound.

About the Author
Andy Nguyen received his BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston. He had been working as a mechanical engineer for 5 years prior to enrolling in medical school. He obtained his MD degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston and received his pathology residency training from the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center located at the Texas Medical Center at Houston. After completing his residency, he stayed on as a faculty member and is currently a Full Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He has clinical and research interests in hematopathology, coagulopathy, and pathology informatics. Dr. Nguyen has published numerous scientific papers, written many invited review articles, and contributed to several textbooks. He has also received multiple teaching awards from the Pathology Department and from the Office of the Dean.

Amitava Dasgupta received his PhD degree in Chemistry from Stanford University and his fellowship training in Clinical Chemistry from the Laboratory Medicine Department of the University of Washington School of Medicine at Seattle. He is a tenured Full Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center located at the Texas Medical Center at Houston. Dr. Dasgupta has published 210 scientific papers, written many invited review articles, and has edited, co-edited or written 15 books. He is on the Editorial Board of five major medical journals including American Journal of Clinical Pathology, Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Clinica Chimica Acta and Journal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis.

Amer Wahed is a graduate of Medicine, training initially in Internal Medicine at Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, England. He subsequently trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology from the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. After working for several years in a private setting, he joined the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas-Houston Health Sciences Center. Currently he is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Associate Director of Clinical Chemistry and Immunology at Memorial-Hermann Hospital at the Texas Medical Center. He is also the Associate Director of the Pathology Residency Program at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School. Dr. Wahed has a strong interest in teaching and is actively involved in the education of medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows. He has been recognized for his teaching contributions through awards from his department, as well as the Office of the Dean. He is also active in mentoring pathology residents in research and has published multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals.

About the Author
Janni Lee Simner first became fascinated with the Icelandic sagas—and with the woman whose uncle said she had the eyes of a thief—during a visit to Iceland. Standing in the rift valley of Thingvellir with a battered copy of Njal's Saga in her backpack, she realized the characters she was reading about had walked the same ground. As the wind blew around her, she sat down and wrote the opening scene of Thief Eyes.

Janni lives more than four thousand miles from Iceland in Tucson, Arizona, where the hot, dry desert weather is about as unlike Iceland as one can get and still be on the same planet. She's also the author of four books for younger readers and more than thirty short stories. Janni is currently working on the sequel to her first young adult novel, Bones of Faerie.

Chapter 1

Icy rain blew into my hood and dripped down my neck as I knelt on the mossy stones. The sky was gray, layers of cloud hiding any hint of sun. The wind picked up, and I shivered, missing the hot desert skies of home. It was way too cold for a June day.

Not that Dad noticed. He grinned as he traced a crack running through the rocks. "Amazing, isn't it? You can almost feel the earth pulling apart."

"Yeah. Sure." I looked down into the small fissure and saw nothing but endless dark. I shifted my soggy backpack on my shoulders and rubbed my eyes, gritty from a night spent flying across the Atlantic. I'd never been much good at sleeping on planes. Yeah, Dad, I followed you four thousand miles to Iceland so we could stare at holes in the ground.

I got up, stretching stiff legs. Beyond a metal fence, the cliff where we stood dropped down to a grassy plain. A gray river braided its way through bright green grasses, and a few wet geese hunkered down by its shores. The geese looked cold, too. Probably they were thinking the same thing I was: the sooner they could get somewhere warm, the better.

"So this is where it happened?" I tried to sound casual, like I didn't much care.

Dad looked up. His dark eyes were shot with red--he wasn't good at sleeping on planes, either--and his hair stuck out from beneath his windbreaker, dripping water. "You mean the rifting? It's happening throughout this valley. The North American and European tectonic plates meet here, and they're forever pulling away from each other. Only the pulling doesn't all happen in any one place, so--"

"That's not what I mean." I fought not to let my frustration show. You know that's not what I mean.

Dad sighed. "No, Haley, this isn't where it happened." His sleep-deprived eyes took on the lost look I'd come to know way too well this past year. The look that made me decide Dad didn't need to know if I'd blown another test at school, or fallen asleep in class because nightmares had woken me in the middle of the night again, or was tired of peanut butter and jelly for dinner but just as tired of cooking if I wanted anything else.

I'd come four thousand miles. This was more important than a few bad dreams or missed meals. "Where, then?"

A couple brushed past us, clutching the hands of the toddler who walked between them. Dad looked at the cracked earth. "Logberg. Law Rock."

"Where's that?" Rain soaked through my running shoes, turning my socks clammy and cold. Back home, we canceled track meets for weather like this--but I was the one who'd asked Dad to bring me here. He'd wanted to stay at the guesthouse and catch up on his jet-lagged sleep.

Dad sighed again. "You're not going to let this go, are you?"

Let this go? I dug my nails into my cold, damp palms. No need for Dad to hear me screaming, either. When your mother disappears without a trace, you don't just let it go. "I want to see. Is that so much to ask?" I kept my voice calm, reasonable--the same voice I'd used to convince Dad to take me to Thingvellir today, because I really wanted to visit the national park that was the site of Iceland's ancient parliament and in the middle of a rift valley and, oh, yeah, just happened to be the place where my mother disappeared last summer.

"Fine, Haley." Dad got to his feet, and I knew for once I'd won. I followed him away from the lookout, my running shoes squishing on the wet gravel path. Dripping tendrils escaped my blond ponytail and clung damply to my cheeks. I slowed to match Dad's pace. I'd grown taller than him this past year, which still seemed strange.

The path cut down through a cleft between blocky stone walls that formed a perfect wind tunnel. Goose bumps prickled beneath my damp sleeves. Dad looked up at the rocks. "You can almost see how they must have fit together once, can't you? Before the rifting tugged them apart."

What I saw was my father hiding behind another geology lecture. Maybe Dad couldn't help it. Maybe when you spent your whole life studying rocks and earthquakes, you forgot how to talk to people.

Thief of Time or The Heart?

I desperately wanted to read this book because I absolutely loved Janni Lee Simner's "Bones of Faerie". I figured if this book was half as good as that one, then I wouldn't be able to put it down.

The things I loved about this book. The fact that the author used Icelandic Mythology and weaved a story that brought that aspect and modern day together. These parts I found fascinating and wanted to know more. This alone could've made the story brilliant. Unfortuately, that didn't happpen.

I wish I could say that I really connected with the characters, the plot, story, but I can't. For a fairly short book, it seemed to take me forever to get through this one. I found myself trying to read quickly just to get through it, but then having to go back to find out what was really going on. I tried skimming over the parts that seemed "average" at best. That still wasn't working. I am all for stories where I can cheer on the characters that I've grown to love throughout and thier relationships with each other.

Haley and her father had a very seemed like they hardly knew each other and the "love and passion" felt between Haley and Ari, well let's just say I couldn't feel it.

This book had all the potential of being wonderful. I really felt as though the author sold herself short by not giving the characters more depth and using the mythology to make a plot line that would run deep and rich.

I want to point out that this book could easily be a Young Adult/Adult crossover and that this book may be a little too mature for the younger side of the YA audience.

Not Janni Lee Simner's best work, but it certainly wouldn't stop me from picking up another one of her books. I mentioned earlier in the review just how much I loved "Bones of Faerie" so I know that this author is a talented writer. Maybe the book itself just wasn't for me. If you're also a Simner fan, it may be worth giving this one a try.

Powerful, moving, and mature

"Young adult fiction" covers a lot of ground. At one end of the scale, it can be a simple children's story, with a little sex and violence thrown in to make it "mature" and "edgy". Thief Eyes is at the other end of the scale: it's a sophisticated, extremely well-crafted novel, which just so happens to be written in a way that teenagers will find approachable and enjoyable. I had planned to read it a few chapters at a time, but wound up going cover to cover in one sitting.

I won't describe the plot in detail, because it seems like that might spoil it. But it works on two levels -- as an adventure based on the building blocks of Norse mythology, and as a relationship story about family and about the awkward places in between friendship and romance. The Norse elements are handled very nicely -- there's enough detail to intrigue the reader, but not so much that it would bog down the story (though the author's note thoughtfully provides a reading list for those left wanting to know more). And the climax is emotionally wrenching, especially because the reader can empathize with nearly everyone involved on both sides of the conflict.

I wish more authors would write about Scandinavian mythology

The retelling of Icelandic sagas and Scandinavian mythology is what drew me to this story. There are hardly any of these retellings, which is a shame because there's so much great material there. So I eagerly awaited my copy of Thief Eyes.

Overall, it was interesting. The author's spin on Hallgerd's story is clever and intriguing, and shows Hallgerd as more than the evil, selfish girl painted by history/lore. The magical aspect of the story, however, is a bit too confusing. I couldn't figure out why the story unfolded the way it did, except that it *had* to.

I did like that the other magical characters were individuals with their own agendas and purposes. Even though some of them helped Haley, they were still working toward their own goals. It added a layer of believable and interesting tension. Though I didn't understand the purpose of bringing Odin into the story, since his appearance is very brief and there are no consequences as a result. It seemed like an extreme way to get rid of the uncle.

The one aspect of the story that I couldn't get around, though, was the way Haley interacted with Ari. She scorned her father for cheating on her mother, and now she's basically cheating on her boyfriend. I think introducing these feelings to her was a very good thing, but they were never explored. It should have created an understanding of her father's actions, and how stupid things happen sometimes. It also should have made her angry at herself for doing exactly what she hated her father for. Instead, she went with it, and then magically worked things out with her boyfriend so that everyone is happy. Life is never that neat.

Still, it was a pretty enjoyable read. I think the language could have been toned down because the story's content isn't edgy enough for it, and that could have opened up the audience to younger teens.
