Scary at first (to this nonengineer), but...yes!

Scattered through the book are a number of wonderfully informal "kitchen physics" type experiments.
Example, p. 378: "Why is the sky blue?" Pour some milk into a glass of water, shine a flashlight toward yourself from the back side of the glass and see, in effect, the setting sun (red). Now shine it from one side of the glass and see, instead, the daytime sky (blue). It works!! (This is my quick synopsis. Crawford's presentation is worded much better, and is tied back into his on-going presentation of certain physics equations of course.)
So, why "Scary at first..."? Because just a few pages into Chapter 1, you see stuff like this...
sin (psi) = psi - (psi^3/3!) + (psi^5/5!) - ..., (the Taylor's series expansion)
...and two pages before that (at the very beinning of the book) you see this...
psi(x) = A cos (wt + phi1)
...i.e., that Schroedinger-looking psi (and the "phi-1" variant on Greek letter phi) where you might expect the following which occurs in most "normal" textbooks:
x(t) = A cos (wt + phi)
(I've borrowed 'w' to represent little omega throughout.)
In short, when you first open the book, it has a distinctly "advanced" flavor, beyond a normal college level physics text. But against that you have to weigh the effect of Crawford's many "Home experiments" (with tuning forks or an empty paper towel roll bonked on your head, etc). Overall, even a nonengineer might find a lot to appreciate in this book.

(Personal note: When I was around 10 to 12 years old, Frank Crawford, the author, was my mother's landlord, in Berkeley, and I have vivid memories of him, half a century later -- as he worked on his Ph.D. dissertation at our shared diningroom table, and took radios apart like a kid. Advanced and "scary" though his book may look, I know he was simply not like that. Rather, he was a child at heart, with many of the same qualities often cited in connection with Richard Feynman, but minus Feynman's competitive edginess.)

Have fun and learn all about waves

This is a fantastic book. It must have taken decades for the author (Frank Crawford) to write all these things, to imagine so many simple experiments, to invent such instructive exercises. The approach is very concrete, with little mathematics in the beginning. Actually, the mathematics grows with the book in a very natural way. As one would expect, the apotheosis of this great show happens when light waves, that is optics, appears. There is a small kit of quarter plates, polaroids, etc, which permit you to make beautiful observations. The explanation of how Edwin Land hit on the idea of artificial nicols (polaroids) is one of my favorites. Whenever I teach anything connected to waves, even mathematical topics, like the Fourier theorem, I always give a look at this volume. Usually it pays! It is a pity that, by its content, it seldom fits in the usual courses.

For Inquisitive minds

Maybe the best volume of Berkeley physics. For those who are aware of series Berkeley Physics I have to say that it can be compared only with the second in Emags. It is quite an extensive book and covers almost everything concerning wave theory. Although it is rather old it is still one of the best reference books which however doesn't include the application of wave theory in quantum mechanics. The author explains with every detail the material and provides the reader with pictures that make the book comprehensive. It may be a big book but the reader can choose the chapters he or she wants and read the independantly. Although the material covers many applications of wave theory it is suggested for those who just want to learn the basic principles.

Excellent overview

This book is a very good introduction to the Buddhist tradition, historically and cross-culturally. The book incorporates excerpts from basic scriptures and major writings, in an effort to represent the mainstream of Buddhist thought. Although, as they state in the preface, there is "an enormous diversity within Buddhism and no fixed standard of orthodoxy" the editor and authors succeed in presenting the "common ground of discussion" they aim to reveal. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in beginning a study of Buddhist history, thought and culture.

Book is in fact a Reader

This book is not an history of Buddhism in India, China and Japan. It is a reader broadly divided into 13 sections. These are briefly introduced by the editor. The editor's intrusions are minimal and it is rarely clear why certain "representative" passages have been chosen, and others left out. That said, I felt the book adequately covered the traditions it sought to represent. And, for a text book, it's quite inexpensive.

The Bird's-Eye View of Buddhism

This is a huge overview of the many sects and schools of Buddhism that developed in India, China, and then Japan. There is very little detail here, and the authors/editors don't dwell on anyone or any subject for long before moving on, but if you are looking for a survey, that is the book's great strength. Another thing to be aware of is that aside from introductions to each country's tradition at the start of the three major sections, the authors/editors prefer to say little and let Buddhist texts (in translation of course) speak for themselves. This might be a negative if you are looking for hand-holding and scholarly exegesis, but personally I found it very rewarding - no book on Buddhism I've ever read has made the various sutras and other texts so accessible, and in such manageable and well-chosen little chunks.

I take one star off because at times a book of this length, yet with no stylistic consistency (due to the enormous variety of sources translated here) and little thematic unity can drag. Reading excerpt after excerpt can get tiring at times when you are looking for the deeper or unitive meaning of what is being taught. Another thing is there's a slight and generally well-concealed, but still evident, bias toward the Mahayana evidenced here, and the occasional derogatory remark toward the selfish little Hinayana school. To be expected, of course, from scholars whose area of expertise is purely Mahayanist nations (China/Japan), but out of place in an otherwise so balanced and scholarly work.

All in all though this book will let you read a lot of the texts/sutras as they are in themselves, and introduce you to an enormous number of Buddhist thinkers, mystics, schools, traditions, lineages, and so on, while providing a decent picture of how Buddhism developed in India and then spread through China to Japan. Recommended for anyone interested in Buddhist history.

This book is great. I have never seen a finance or accounting book that so plainly explains different concepts. I have had 700 level accounting and finance and then took a healthcare finance course. This book finally made a lot of the information I had learned in the previous 2 courses make sense. I would highly recommend this for any healthcare finance program. And if you just want to learn more about this, it's a book that you can teach yourself from. I actually enjoyed sitting down to read this book. Read the whole thing in my 7-week course. Highly recommend, I wish more textbook writers had this style!

Fundamentals of Healthcare Finance, Second Edition

It's an excellent book, thank goodness I had a prior background as a local government department administrator and am married to an accountant. The author walks the reader through the concepts and builds on the prior chapters. Chapter 11 and 12 bring it all together so if you struggled in the chapters leading up to the final ones your going to be doing a lot of searching prior chapters figure out the problems. The book is a good read with the exception of one chapter which my wife commented on that the author was trying to fit an entire semester of accounting 101 into a single chapter. She helped me considerably with that one and then it all made sense. If you have the basics down this text will put it all in perspective.

Fantastic thriller, that does not read like a YA book!

You might think your know the people in your life. But do you?

That is really the first thought I had, after finishing this book. Which should tell you something!

But lets start at the beginning, shall we?

When i first started to read this book -for about the first 10% or so of it really- i was unsure about it.

The characters felt rather boring and the constant naming and trashing people got on my nerves a bit.

But i read on, and thank god i did!

It seems that Kelly needed those first few pages to get into her writing style, because the rest of the book is really good!

She manages to suck you into the story, telling details and giving information about what is happening and hints of who might be connected without actually giving the answers away.

Kelly really manages to write interesting characters and relations between them, put a spin on situations and go to extremes. But not over the top.

For most of the book it doesn't feel like you are reading about teenagers, but an adult thriller -mostly because those kids just go nosing around in business they should really not be nosing around in at their age! Still....

There are some parts -like i said the beginning and a few sentences here and there in the rest of the book- that shows that sometimes the author tried to bring in this whole teenage situation and name calling and overdone dramatics. But mostly, Kelly focused on the story itself and the mystery about the crimes.

You all should read it. It is fantastic! Just push through those first few pages/percent of the book and get sucked into a heart-racing, edge-of-my-seat reading experience!

Honestly this book to me is what i expected from Gone Girl, with the kind of praise that book received. And while i did not feel that way about Gone Girl at all, to me this book -Foxglove Killings- actually would deserve all the price about never knowing what actually happens, never knowing who you can trust, and a narrator that has no idea what the heck is going on, just as the reader does!

Tara Kelly has crafted an unnerving mystery that keeps you guessing until the end!

And I truly mean that because guess what? I didn't predict who the killer was! For that alone, I love The Foxglove Killings. Honestly, it doesn't happen often. Usually if it's not outright obvious there's some little clue that gives it away just that bit too early, but this time around I got to enjoy the revelation in the moment. And oh, how I did. It wasn't that it's this huge giant shock because it does make sense. For me, I paused, replayed all that had happened in this new light and thought "well, holy shit". Major kudos to Tara Kelly. I feel like I should've realised and that makes it all the better. What Kelly did such a fantastic job of was providing us multiple suspects. So many characters throughout this book could've legitimately been the killer, because at one time or another each had motive and Kelly successfully had me questioning all of them. This only builds the tension because like Nova I couldn't decide who to trust and so there's this constant note of danger, increasing as the story continues and characters disappear.

The suspense of The Foxglove Killings is palpable. This book is definitely a thriller. Right from the beginning Kelly sets the scene and she never loses the tone throughout the rest of the novel. It is an intense, nerve-wracking and chilling atmospheric read that I couldn't put down. I started reading The Foxglove Killings pretty late and at about 11.30pm when I was getting into bed, Kindle had helpfully informed me I only had an hour and a half left to read. I figured, why not? I had nowhere to be the next day. Yeah, finishing the book at 1.30am in a pitch black and silent house? Not my brightest idea. It's not that The Foxglove Killings crosses into horror. There's certainly some horrific moments but not in an overly gory, scare the bejeezus out of you way. It's subtle. It's the creepy moments that have you reading with bated breath, that evoke just enough fear and disgust that your skin crawls. It's the descriptions of that feeling of being watched, of hearing a noise outside the window, of unknowingly being vulnerable and in danger, of realising just how sadistic the killer is. I finished The Foxglove Killings, settled in to go to sleep, and then froze with fear because something rustled outside my window, which is actually a common noise. It wasn't until that moment that I even realised Kelly's writing had honestly freaked me out. Which then had me grinning, because I do love being scared. It just wasn't something I expected from this book!

The Foxglove Killings portrays some heartfelt drama too. Because while a psychopathic killer is on the loose, life still goes on. So throughout this book there's still the everyday issues of love, loss, bullying, family, friendship, sex, betrayal, prejudice, and the like. Kelly strikes a great balance, because the everydayness, the things seemingly unrelated to the murders and the killer, still increase the terrifying nature of the mystery. Because let's face it, one of these characters, dealing with their own issues, is also a murderer. Plus so many of the characters have an inherent brutality to them. This entire town has that feeling, what with the feud between the residents and the 'cakes'. It's terrible, the fighting and bullying. And Nova is caught in the middle of it. I really liked Nova. She has this depth to her, this thoughtfulness and way of seeing and feeling that is relatable. I liked her relationships with other characters, Alex especially. You're hoping these two figure out their feelings for each other and are able to make it work while I also worrying there's more to it that they can't get past. The emotion of being best friends but facing inevitable changes and the possibility of romance is charged. Jenika increases the tension, both of the story and between Nova and Alex. She's full of so much anger and bitterness. The way her and Nova clash but also connect is great. Seriously, the intensity between all of these characters kind of made my heart hurt. The clear winner for Favourite Character is Gramps though. I loved how he was always prepared to listen to Nova, to be honest and forthright. He gave you the sense that everything could be okay, which is interesting in a book that is at times so unsettling.

The Foxglove Killings is everything I want in a mystery. Unpredictable and frightening, it packs a whollop.

Smack Full of Mystery!

I’m all about a great YA mystery, and while the actual synopsis of the Foxglove Killings sounded promising, it still had that ring of Nancy Drew to it of a wanna be teen detective that almost threw me off of it. But I am so thrilled that I went ahead and read this novel as it was nothing like I imagined it would be!

Our story begins with our heroine, Nova, who lives in a small coastal town that’s pretty run down, and only manages to survive by rich people, who love to use their small town as a summer get away. And this is where all her trouble begins. With the resurgence of the “cakes” as they call them, it also means Nova has to deal with her ex-boyfriend; a guy whom she thought had loved her. And if dealing with the cruel tendencies of the cakes wasn’t enough Nova’s best friend is starting to act odd. The Alex she always knew is changing, and for her, it’s not in his best interest. Especially when she finds out he’s been hanging out with her arch nemesis. And if all of this wasn’t enough, add into the mix a string of mutilated animals that have been unearthed around her town, weird anonymous notes sent to her, people not acting their norm, and to top everything off someone is killing teens. If Nova wants to keep those she loves safe, she knows she needs to figure out the connection, and do it quickly before anyone she loves becomes the next victim.

I am the first person who would totally bash a novel that’s light and fluffy with this type of plot, and full of idiotic characters who would do something totally not within the realm of logic when it comes to a psychopath around town. Luckily for me, not only did the Foxglove Killings have a massively juicy plot, but not one character did anything that made them appear stupid. They were all written perfectly, and acted per the norm of a regular teen in these situations. Nova wasn’t the junior detective I was fearing, but instead had a logical head on her shoulders, and didn’t truly “sleuth” her way around the mystery. Instead she focused on the why and the how of each thing that went wrong, and tried using logic to tie everything together. As for the villain….I NEVER saw it coming. My mind just did not venture into that area, and I was fully surprised by the outcome! Which was such a full out change from figuring out the killer, motive, and everything else within three seconds flat of reading other books in the same line. I seriously did not figure it out until it actually happened, and I won’t give anything away! The Foxglove Killings was a fantastic read with a great plot, good set of characters, and great ending! I will say I wish things had changed a little bit in the actual epilogue, but it does end, and I felt everything was pretty much answered. I totally recommend this book if you love a good mystery!

Dissapointing

Wow..I was really looking forward to this book. I enjoyed the Ho'oponopono class in Sept '06 and having been eagerly awaiting this book. Like most others said, there is nothing in it that can't be found on the Ho' website. It would be a decent read for someone totally new to the subject but a far better choice would be "The Easiest Way" by Mabel Katz. This could have been an amazing book but Vitale chose to use it more as an opportunity to promote more of his products..and it shows

This Book Could Have Been A Third In Its Size!

The only reason I give it one star, & not "ZERO" is it does contain some very useful information on a few pages. However, it is FULL of SHAMEFUL advertisements for Dr. Joe Vatale's other products complete with web addresses. Minus the advertisements complete with testimonials this book could have easily been a three or four star, even though it doesn't contain any Ho'oponopono exercises in great depth i.e. there is very little in this book that can't be found on the Internet for free.

He does mention a video of Ho'oponopono, and makes NO MENTION of were it could be found. I'm guessing it is because he had no part in the creation of the Ho'oponopono video.

This was my first introduction to Ho'oponopono. If I were already acquainted with this loving process, this book would offer "ZERO" except for advertisements for Dr. Vitale & some of his friends and business partners.

I paid for a 200 page commercial. "Dr. Vitale you got me once, but most likely, NEVER will again."

A Good Introduction

This was the first book I have read by Joe Vitale. I knew that he was one of the participants of "The Secret" but it was the possibility of learning more about Ho'oponopono and Dr. Hew' Len's experience with criminal inmates that made me pick up this book. I was curious about how Dr. Vitale would meld his beliefs about the law of attraction (which has to do with manifesting in the outer world) with the technique of Ho'oponopono which has to do with inner, spiritual qualities of love and forgiveness.

Ho'oponopono is a simple yet very radical process. It is not, however new, secret, or strictly Hawaiian and it is not a process that was designed to offer wealth or health. It is a process that, when used on yourself, by yourself heals your OWN mind of negative, judgemental or unloving thoughts of yourself or others and brings you closer and closer to having the experience of the love of God which you then share with others. Having a peaceful, loving and joyous mind will inevitably attract to you a more peaceful, loving and joyous life, which will likely result in better health, more wealth and other external trappings of success, but not necessarily. The Course in Miracles, which was published about 30 years ago offers very detailed theoretical and metaphysical background for how and why this works along with 365 daily exercises designed to help individuals to undo their past conditioning and return to their original state of Love by working on their own responses to outer events. A Guide to Psychotherapy was also published by the Foundation for the Course in Miracles that emphasizes what Vitale does so well in this book: if you see something wrong in someone or some thing or some event, it is inside your own self that this 'wrongness' that you are perceiving must be healed, not in them. He reminds his readers often: in whatever problems you encounter in your life - if you are encountering it, by your observation and participation, YOU are part of the problem and the only part that you can fix is that part of the problem that arises from your own thoughts about it. Mr. Vitale's book describes numerous situations where applying this concept has resulted in miraculous breakthroughs for people and as a person who has been endeavouring to practice this healing method, I can tell you that it works.

Now, I share some of the concerns/criticisms of some of the reviewers here that Joe is commodifying what is a very deeply spiritual practice and re-packaging the work of shaman practitioner Ihaleakala Hew Len as if it is a newly refurbished car - for popular consumption. At the same time, perhaps it takes a master-marketer like Mr. Vitale to make a concept that is eminently distasteful to most egos (everything wrong you see in your world is YOUR FAULT!) and make the remedy (Ho'oponopono) palatable, desirable and actually DOABLE. And in "Zero Limits" he successfully does this. The book is engaging, informative and does give readers a taste of the power of Ho'oponopono. It shares with us Dr. Vitale's journey as he learns that even more than having external wealth and abundance INNER peace and love and connection with God is primary and at the end, our ultimate goal.

If you are just wading in to the concepts of the Law of Attraction but feel uncomfortable with the focus on material accumulation or think there might be something 'more', you should check out this book or Wayne Dyer's "Manifest Your Destiny" which covers some of the same ground (he calls the zero-point 'the gap'). If you are a spiritual practitioner who is not afraid of references to Jesus and the Holy Sprit and would like to study these concepts seriously and make them a life-long path, I would recommend you check out "A Course in Miracles".

June Parsons purchased her first computer, an Apple II+, in 1981 and quickly became fluent in BASIC, dBASE II, Lotus 123, WordStar, and a variety of accounting programs. The next year she opened a successful small computer retail store with Dan Oja that also offered software instruction to children and adults. Dr. Parsons taught at the university level for more than 20 years. She holds a doctorate in Educational Technology and was certified by the ICCP in 1995. Dr. Parsons began writing and creating educational software for Course Technology in 1992. She contributed to the Windows for Business and Illustrated Series and developed the New Perspectives, e-Course, and Practical series. She works via the Internet with a team of highly skilled media specialists and desktop publishers located in various states and provinces.

An esteemed professional and respected author, Dan Oja, along with June Parsons, purchased an Apple II+ in 1981 and quickly became fluent in BASIC, dBASE II, Lotus 123, WordStar, and a variety of accounting programs. The next year, he and Dr. Parsons opened a successful small computer retail store that offered software instruction to children and adults. Mr. Patrick Carey received his M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as a researcher designing and analyzing clinical studies. Ms. Carol DesJardins spent 25 years in the private sector as a programmer, systems analyst and eventually Chief Information Officer. During that time, she honed her skills with Excel as an analysis tool. She transitioned her knowledge to the classroom and has taught several applications and programming courses. Ms. DesJardins co-authored her first textbook on Excel. In addition to writing, she continues to teach at St. Clair County Community College.

I love this book!

I love this book and would recommend it to any woman who intends to keep her family and household traditionally Jewish... I wasn't completely satisfied with the condition the book arrived in because I've ordered this book in the past a few times (only to lend it out & never see it again) and it usually arrives in better condition, but the information is what counts... This book should be in every traditional Jewish home.

Great Writing Style

I sought out this book after a recommendation from
an Orthodox wife of a rabbi I met briefly in a book store.
I really enjoyed the education this book gave me. The author writes in a wonderful style of personal mixed with the halachic. Although the author is Modern Orthodox I believe she gives a great overall view of running a traditional home. Bravo.
