Great author and 'been-there-done-that!'

The title had put many folks ill at ease but it reflects the diplomatic point at the time written. Really nice book for the region and accurate because I've been there and done that, too! Wish I could have met her and Dr. and Mrs. Bosch. Their books are classic in their approach and speaks volumes of their character.

Only book I've seen that understands both subjects

Bovill does a good job of explaining the principles of fractal geometry in layman's terms for those not already familiar with them. I was particularly impressed with his understanding of how fractal dimension varies with scale and which scales are important for architecture. However, I was disappointed that there were no references made to structural properties of fractals and how they might have excellent strength to weight ratios for a wide range of scales. Everything was taken from a design perspective concerned with texture.

Essential Reading for Everybody Young and Old

This inaugural publication from Andy Troy combines facts from years of research with extremely useful personal experience for leading a healthy, fulfilling life. Not only does Andy help with how you can stay and look younger, but there is a wealth of simple tips to get the most out of life, from meditating to optimzing your sex life. Some of these tips are so simple that we take them for granted, and this publication serves as a reminder for both professionals (psychologists/psychiatrists/trainers) and the lay person that we can lead a physically and mentally healthier, more productive lifestyle by choosing a positive attitude, including more humor and sleep, consuming less alcohol as well as providing an exercise and dietary plan. "To Thine Own Self Be True"

Shakespeare's immortal line: "To Thine Own Self Be True", is exemplified by Andy Troy, in his recently published book: "Living Young - 32 Habits of Ageless People".

Troy, a nationally-certified fitness and health expert, writes candidly and honestly about the reality that we mortals must all face: the accumulation of birthdays, and the challenges that the body, mind and spirit must face as we move through the stages of the life cycle. However, his is not a tome advocating acceptance and complacency in aging. He outlines, clearly delineates and supportively encourages the reader to take up arms (and legs, and stomach, and torsos, etc...) in the fight against the decline that many persons erroneously accept as the natural process of getting older.

This superior book, which is the best I've read in the last decade on health and well-being, does not deny that aging occurs. Instead, what it does brilliantly is provide the reader with transcendent insights, techniques and tools to make a difference. Troy eloquently provides the information that every man and woman needs to get much more out of life as they grow older, and to stop the decline of health and fitness if it has begun.

Troy's book takes a "holistic" path in addressing the human body, mind and spirit. And while he outlines his expertly developed exercises and workout routines to strengthen, restore and rejuvenate the body, he does not stop at the corporeal. Sections include avenues for optimal meditation, posture and breathing to rejuvenate consciousness. His eclectic approach includes sections on hydration, aromatherapy, vitamins, the delights when you "learn something new", the therapeutics of music, and even the panache provided by a "revised" wardrobe.

This informative book even contains recipes for a healthier life, including "Sue's Grilled Chicken & Broccoli in red sauce", a savory dish which I have already made a staple of my culinary repertoire.

Troy, who epitomizes the concept of "do as I do, AND as I say", is a wonderful guide through the myriad challenges faced by an individual who wants to feel better and happier. His narrative is supportive but uncompromising. He understands that if you are reading this book, you want to do something; you don't just want a pat on the back, you want a firm hand up, a plan that can help you live a better, healthier life.

I've read the book several times, and continue to glean new and inspired ways to improve my condition. This book has helped me recommit to exercise, a better diet, and a more rewarding approach to my daily challenges.

But all work and no play makes for a dull existence, and Andy encourages us to enjoy the delicacies and decadences around us. And while he points out the health benefits of one or two glasses of wine, he also gives a nod to the Socrates principal of "moderation".

Troy's book is a revelation, with so many fine recommendations and lessons, and even more insights and delights. "Living Young - 32 Habits of Ageless People" is a cornucopia of useful information and practical and practicable exercises. And that is just one part of this great book. It has been a while since I have felt compelled to express my joy at a worthwhile, and actually helpful commodity. On the mostly rare occasions, when I find a product that I feel can improve the quality of life, I do feel bound to promote or inform about my find. Although I believe that I do, and have, taken basic care of myself, this book empowers and enables me to clearly prioritize my activities for greatest impact. The book allows me to re-think my habits in a clear fashion so I can make decisions on how to improve and maximize my day to day routines which do impact my health. His suggestions are very worthwhile, and those not in my present repertoire will be slowly and thoughtfully included, down to his recipes and suggestions for dining!

This is a good and quick read with long term benefits for everyone. I strongly and highly recommend this book for all!

Make Sure to Get the Errata

The text presents an estimating procedure using production rates. While this is good background to have and is an acceptable methodology, make sure that your instructor also shows you how to use Means. The text does contain numerous errors, so make sure to get the errata sheets from the author. When we asked the author why the corrections have not been updated in the text, the author replied that the publisher said it would cost too much. Somebody needs to tell the publisher to quit selling the book until they fix it!

This book needs to be completely revised.

The original author of this book has been deceased for several revisions. The revisions were not well done and the book is outdated in many areas. Lots of photos which are not worth the space they take up and should be removed. I believe this book survives in tech schools because it has nuggets of well written and well thought out analysis of the estimating process. Without much explanation as to why, the author leans heavily toward the Heavy Civil sector of construction i.e. highways, airports, etc. The software included is also designed for heavy civil. All said, no other author on construction estimating seems to have the grasp of the foundations of estimating as this author. For me, it makes a nice supplemental reference book but I would never adopt it as a textbook.

About the Author
Ross Dunn is Professor of History at San Diego State University, where he teaches African, Islamic, and world history. He is also Director of World History Projects at the National Center for History in the Schools. In 1982 he was elected the first president of the World History Association. Ross Dunn has co-authored many books on teaching world history including History on Trial: Culture Wars and the Teaching of the Past (1997) and The New World History: A Teachers Companion (2000). He is currently working on a text for world history with Elizabeth Cobbs Hoffman entitled, The Spinning Planet (2003).

Laura J. Mitchell is Associate Professor, Vice-Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in the History Department at UC Irvine. She teaches African history, world history, and theory and method in undergraduate and graduate classes. Professor Mitchell works on making sense of early-modern societies in a digital age, and on making history accessible to diverse audiences. Her research on colonial Southern Africa has been supported by grants from Fulbright, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, the UC Office of the President, and the Mellon Foundation. She served on the World History Association Executive Council, currently serves on the AP World History Curriculum Assessment and Development Committee, and is President of the Forum on European Expansion and Global Interaction. Mitchell is the Editor-in-Chief of History Compass Exchanges. Her book, Belongings: Property, Family and Identity in Colonial South Africa (Columbia University Press, 2009) is available online.

Best Introduction for the Financial Mathematician

This book is, as it were, manna from heaven for the aspiring financial mathematician, especially someone without a first degree in mathematics or a mathematically-based subject. The only prerequisites are a very good understanding of set-theory and some knowledge of the theory of continuous functions (at the level of a first course in real analysis, e.g. Apostol's Mathematical Analysis). The development is patient and there is sufficient help for the beginner (full solutions at the back, and, for practice, unproved propositions in the text with proofs at chapter-ends). The coverage is not overwhelming and anyone with the requisite preparation can digest the book in a term's work. Measure theory on its own is an incredibly dry subject. The authors do a great job of covering the essentials in about 300 pages, while making the subject interesting and applicable at the same time. A very attractive feature of the book is its brief focus on mathematical-finance applications. Most chapters end with a small section on such applications which is very useful for someone simultaneously studying mathematical finance. Particularly, it shows how to conceptualize financial models measure-theoretically. A very useful little volume indeed!

Highly accessible

Highly accessible and clear intro to measure and Lebesgue integration. Can relax with this book while waiting for the train after work. Only minor negatives are: (1) not enough exercises and (2) there are typos but Springer Verlag doesn't provide any errata list whatsoever.

(Update 2008) There are now other similar books on the market and the paucity of exercises in this book is just not acceptable. For an inexpensive alternative, I recommend Klambauer's "Real Analysis" published by Dover. He uses Carathéodory's definition of a measurable set which (to me) is a faster path to results. Also his exercises are insightful.

A solid introductory text

This text is a leisurely development of the major concepts in measure of probability theory. There are many useful examples that are sprinkled throughout the text that motivate the discussion. The solutions to the problems are also provided. This book is suitable for advanced undergraduate. Although I don't have any major complaints about the book, there already exists a much better book with many more exercises, diagrams, and much more thorough development and extension of the principal concepts. That book is Jones' "Lebesgue integration on Euclidean space", which I cannot recommend highly enough.

Fun dialogue, kept me chuckling -- and reflecting

I have been having so much fun reading these stories aloud before bed with my guy. Each one is like dessert at the end of the day. But more than that, these stories have staying power - I find myself still thinking about them the next day. I'd be hard-pressed to choose a favorite at this point, but the stories with juvenile characters shine. He nails the childhood psyche, spot on. Can't wait for more from McKelvey.

A worthwhile read!

Be Brave was truly magical. I really enjoyed the nostalgic childhood imagery, which occurred in some of the stories. I also really appreciated the honesty that seemingly went into the entire creation of this book, which the author prefaces us with in the very beginning, even in the title. The dichotomy between success and failure as something humans—even humanoid apes—must endure throughout life is brilliantly displayed in the title story and throughout the entire book. I found myself feeling very inspired while reading this. Not only are we all encouraged to keep moving forward despite our fears, we're also reminded that being brave is, more than likely, our only option.
